I'm having a frustrating issue that's gotten worse over the past several months and I was hoping someone here might have some insight. My mouse and keyboard are "double typing" or "double clicking." Here's what's happening:

Mouse: When I single-click, it often registers as a double-click. This happens intermittently but frequently enough to be really annoying.

Keyboard: Some keys register twice when I press them once (e.g., typing "hello" might come out as "heelllo").

This is happening across the entire OS. I’ve tried the following so far:

  •     Tried cleaning the switches with 90% alcohol and electronic cleaner
  •     Scanned for malware/viruses
  •     Checked USB ports and tried different ones (with the other device unplugged
  •     Reset firmware for both the keyboard and mouse
  •     Reinstalled the OS

My keyboard is a CORSAIR STRAFE RGB that was bought in late 2016 and the mouse is a CORSAIR Harpoon that was bought in late 2023. The usual setup for both is that the keyboard is connected to a USB hub with the mouse being plugged into the keyboards USB port. Like stated before, I plugged both devices into separate USB ports on the PC itself but no luck. If it was just the keyboard doing this then I would just suspect it's just going bad but since the mouse is doing it too it's more perplexing. Any help or ideas would be really appreciated. (Typing this out was a nightmare.)

Do you have a spare mouse or keyboard you can test with?

Or a laptop you can plug the keyboard and mouse into to see if it happens there?

Keyboard -> MX key chattering. Pressing down the switch, applying a few drops of alcohol into it, and working the key out CAN (and usually does) help.

All MX-style switches are prone to this, especially as they age or the cheaper ones. Happens when the plastic housing crumbles to dust from using the switches.

Mouse -> broken switch, needs replacement or repairing the switch (by opening the switch and adjusting the metal spring) if you don't want to solder. No other ways
