tl;dr looking for way to get Windows 11 installed on laptop with losing data. Windows update and usb update and windows 11 update tool doesn't work so looking for out of the box or windows registry edit solutions. Paid tools are also ok.

A while ago my Dad wanted a new laptop but his laptop had 8th gen intel that supported Windows 11 and I saw I could replace the hdd with an ssd so I did along with upgrading the ram. So I connected the old hdd and new ssd to steam deck and copied the drive with linux's dd tool. Laptop works but windows update and usb update and windows 11 update tool all don't work and I don't know why. I might have also done something to prevent Windows 11 from installing but I am not sure.

I also still have the old HDD if that gives anyone any ideas.

Any ideas on how to migrate everything to Windows 11 is appreciated. Paid tools are also ok

FYI I posted about this a while ago but got busy so posting again as I am looking for any type of solution now.

install the old hdd back into the machine then upgrade to 11 , then copy over to the ssd

Maybe, the upgrade was over a year ago so I need to copy over additional files. Maybe I can just make note of all the new files on the ssd though and use a usb

Ok so if its failing the upgrade the easiest way is to just simply get the data backed up and go from 0 here.

Also check if tpm is on. But if its already allowing you to do so through update it will be on.

Better to start fresh than have a alreadt issue prone 10 get upgraded to 11

Use free Macrium Reflect to clone from the HDD to the SSD.

Run the setup.exe of the Windows 11 installer using CMD with the parameter "/product server" which bypasses the checks for upgrade.
