Do not under any circumstances buy a 14900K or 13900K. They have been notorious for frying themselves, being unstable, and dying for the past 2 years. This issue also affect 14700K and 13700K to a lesser extent. Also affects KF models and maybe non K models. I have a 14900K that became unstable after a few months, diagnosed the issue after weeks of troubleshooting, RMA'd it back to Intel, got a new 14900K. That 14900K (the one I'm using right now) also became unstable and started dying after just 3-5 months. The only way to fix this issue is by underclocking some P cores, which means less performance, and means you're not getting what you paid for. Also the fact that nobody knows how much farther these CPUs will degrade in the future is just not something anybody should be dealing with. 

And don't even think about buying the Intel 285K or anything in the 200 series, they perform worse than a 14600K in gaming and you'll be paying top dollar for it. I also heard about some instability issue with the iGPU being enabled, don't know much about what happened there, but investing in intel CPUs now is just a terrible idea. 

Since experiencing these issue with my 14900K, 2 of my friends and my brother have upgraded their systems. In every case, I recommended that they got with AMD systems, and they have had zero issues with their CPUs. My friends got a 9800X3D and a 9900X, and my brother is using a 9950X with a Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120SE ($35 cooler that handles it under full 250W multicore load, getting above stock performance with no manual OC, just a PBO profile). I know with 100% certainty if they had purchased high end Intel CPUs I'd be dealing with constant tech support requests from 3 separate people with completely random, bullshit BSODs and other errors (as I experienced with my 14900K, it showed dozens of separate BSOD errors over the multiple weeks i was trying to fix it, and completely random, totally undiagnosable app crashes and corruption)

I am using it for a couple of things.

1. CGI/VFX: These take a while with the software I am using and run much faster with a 24-core processor and a good GPU.

2 CAD: I use multiple industry CAD software: SOLIDWORKS, Fusion 360. These are very CPU-heavy.

3: A little gaming.

 

I am also biased toward Intel and Nvidia. I am not changing to AMD on either.

To answer the questions from here:

1. Budget and location:

I am in the us and I would like to keep my budget to about 1500-1700 dollars.

2. Aim:

I answered that above.

3. Monitors:

I currently have one, and I might get one more. I don't need an insane one because I am not doing a lot of gaming.

4. Peripherals:

I already have budgeted what I need, i.e., speakers, mouse, keyboard.

5. Why are you upgrading:

Because what I currently have is not good. I currently have an integrated graphics Intel i7 12th-gen laptop.

Intel 14 gen for the better thread scheduling. 750W psu will suffice just fine and here's a case with better airflow.

I changed the cpu to the 14900k but it puts you about $50 over budget otherwise solid build. EDIT: last I check there was a bundle at micro center with the 14900k but it might not be at the one near you.  https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Z2svcx

This problem potentially impacts basically any Intel 13th/14th gen CPU running over 65W, which includes the 14700K(F) as well.

 

That said, at this point, all of the BIOS updates and microcode fixes should be available so that this is a non-issue. At least, that's what Intel says, so you'll have to decide if you trust them or not.

 

Have you checked benchmarks to make sure that Arrow Lake or Ryzen 9000 series aren't better for your particular tasks?
