Bulk Wifi (Apartment Managed), bringing Ethernet to office space

Go to solution Solved by azgoodaz,

Well Internet provider didn't want to send out a technician to put in an Ethernet jack so we just bought a 40 foot Ethernet cable.

Thanks for the input/help everyone.

So for those who don't know, Bulk Wifi is when an apartment complex partners with a specific Internet provider to give you better rate/deal, and this router is built within the apartment (resident cannot access it, change password, change DnS or even press the WPS button... Can't change anything).

Currently my new apartment is getting gig up/down which is amazing although the Ethernet port where the is located in the living room is about 100 feet away from our office area.

So my question is, is there a way to make a Ethernet port on the room maybe via an Extender or Mesh maybe? Sadly I looked through Amazon but nothing states it supports Bulk Wifi. Or would the only solution would be to buy a huge Ethernet cable and just run it across the apartment?

Has any worked with Bulk WiFi before? This is the first time I experienced this.

We don't have access to the WPS button so anything that needs this to get information is almost impossible.

I would personally run a long, slim ethernet cable from the living room and end it wherever you feel comfortable. And then I would hook it up to a wireless router (LAN port, not WAN port), and broadcast whatever SSID you want.

That's what I've done at work to fix poor wifi reception in a basement office room where me and 4 other guys reside.

Its just separate vlans with some security. Literally any normal router, switch, mesh,... Will work. They just gave their deployment a random name.

Anyway just run a thin or flat cable to your office if you can. If not get a mesh wifi network of your choice and call it good. Id plug a simple 4 port cheap tp link swirch at the entrance point in your appartment so if you need more ports you have them ready.

So I got this from a friend https://a.co/d/9A6bmQQ , setup was through the website and it connected to the internal router and created a mesh like system without a problem although once I put the Ethernet cable in it and connected my PC to it, it just had no Internet. Could be a DnS issue? Have no clue

That's not a mesh device. It's a WiFi range extender. Operates differently.

Are there any status lights on the Rockspace AC1200?

Power and Signal are Blue although the WPS is non existent because I can't press the WPS on our router. 😕

Blue in the manual says "repeater has connected to your existing Wi-Fi and it's position is proper."

If you haven't done anything to configure the extender so it knows what to connect to, you'll have do do this yourself. Please follow the instructions from the manual when not using WPS.

Wifi range extender NOT what you want here. One of the FEW devices unlikely to function in this setup

But what are you going to plug the other end of the ethernet cable into?

A wireless router? (like this Wi-Fi 6E one)
A unmanaged network switch? (like this 8-port gigabit switch)

Both?

Buying a long cable is only half of the solution.

The other end is a PC, the 40 foot cable solution worked

Internet provider said the router doesn't support any extenders or other routers connected to it so there would be no point in going that route and spending money on nothing.

I'm confused why you came here for help and then tried to use a solution that no one suggested. And after being told that your solution wasn't going to work, you're giving up?? Why did you even ask us for help?

- - - -

Does your apartment Wi-Fi use a captive portal (i.e. saying Yes to conditions and inputing identifiable information), or does it limit the number of devices per ethernet port?

Because I feel like the Internet Provider is just saying that to prevent you from trying anything.

I would still drop by Best Buy or buy a cheap wireless router from Amazon and give it a try. There's no reason not to try - having decent Wi-Fi is pretty essential to modern life since everything uses internet nowadays. And if it doesn't work, then you return it. No money loss, just small time loss.

This sounds like a security nightmare. They just expect you to plug your computer into a random port in the wall without knowing what is on the other end? I WOULD NOT do any kind of banking or personally sensitive work on this machine.
