Hey all,

I'm planning to upgrade my rig.

I upgraded my GPU and PSU last year to a RTX 4070ti SUPER. So those parts are already set. Will also keep my case.
My current setup is based on a I9-9900k and I feel like I was bottle necked in the CPU department while playing the new DUNE beta weekend.

I'm also dabbling a bit into self hosted LLM which made me think about upgrading RAM as I'm running 32GB DDR4 ram.

So this are the parts I picked for my upgrade.
(Please note that I'm based in Germany and the picks are the equivalents to the ones I chose.)

Any recommendations to change anything?

I'd only change the cooler, ram and motherboard and maaaaaybe the SSD

The first 3 for bang for the buck the later just for reliability (not a bad ssd but there are better ones for cheaper)

https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/2gPyRV

Basically I'd do this which (using german PCPP) is also about 250 euros cheaper

What if YOU were cake all along?

Thanks! I didn't even know there was an option to choose another country on PCPP. Will use it the future.

I did pick the motherboard because of the newer chipset. I read into it and somehow decided that it would be worth it... but already forgot what the difference was.

On RAM I agree... I'd just pick the cheapest kit available at the time. Preferably without RGB nonsense 🙂

Isn't PCIe 5.0 worth it at all?

Yeah neither did I till I F'ed around with it like I do with basically everything (partly why I love tech)

Even then it doesnt really matter cause for more tasking uses its better to have the xX70-E due to the more hardware features

I really dont see how the trident kit could be the cheapest since they are a more premium kit, I assume you didnt sort by price so you scrolled a bit and saw them >200 euros

For your gpu no cause its still 4.0 so no

For your SSD you got ones, many b650 boards have PCIe 5.0 for SSDs and the x670-E boards as well since it is a "premium feature"

The idea that "newest is always best" isnt a realistic or good one

Case in point, the 5090. Sure its the fastest but it can unalive itself at best, burn down your house at worst so you take a hefty risk with it

Here's a few cost cutters. Low profile RAM so that the heatsinks don't impede a dual tower cpu cooler.

Thanks for all the input. I'm kind of a Noctua fanboy, so I might still go for the more expensive cooler 😄

It was acutally one of the cheapest sets in the store I've used to browse for all the parts. At least with the criteria of  64GB Kit, low profile, no RGB,...
But yes, will defenetily just look for the cheaper ones when I'm ordering.

Understood. I knew my GPU wasn't PCIe 5.0. Yet I looked for upgradeability later one. But who knows what's the next big thing in 5 years...
I was checking the specs on the mainboard and looked for the prossibility to have 2 M.2 slots with PCIe 5.0 for maximum SSD performance. Even though the USB-C ports would have been disabled then.

Thanks. I will look for a xX70-E Chipset then. Maybe I can find an even cheaper option. I really don't need WIFI but all motherboards in this pricerange just have it on board. I'd rather prefer 5G Ethernet for better transfer speed to my NAS.

be quiet! recently released their Pure Rock Pro 3 series cpu coolers and they've received good reviews.

I am not quite sure with the ram compatablity on those which could be a problem

I couldnt find conclusive statements on if they need some of the lower low profile ram kits or if they are just >40mm

Wouldn't going for 2x48GB be more interesting for your use case?

The PA120 is a good pick as mentioned above, I use it with my 9950x without any problems, and it's way cheaper (it's ok if you prefer noctue due to personal preference still)

That x870 motherboard is lacking in features and expensive, it's pretty much the same as a b650e feature-wise.

You'd be better off with a x670e, or with a plain b650.

Do you think going for dual-GPU is something you'd ever do? If so, it'd be better to look for a mobo that supports that properly.
