Hello All!

I have a question that needed a clarification. Thanks in advance for helping me out!

Currently, my HP Victus Gaming Laptop has 8GB x 2 RAM sticks at 3200Mhz.

Will there be any problem if I upgrade one of the sticks to 16GB and leave the other in 8GB (both at 3200Mhz)?

>> 16GB 3200Mhz + 16GB 3200Mhz (Total 32GB)

                               or

>> 16GB 3200Mhz + 8Gb 3200 Mhz (Total 24GB)

Thanks for taking your time and have a great day ahead!

I'd go for the 32GB pair, especially if you're planning to keep this laptop for the foreseeable future. If you mix DIMMs of different capacities, I believe either they won't run in dual channel anymore or only the amount that all DIMMs support will be dual channel.

And of course, if you're not consistently using all of the 16 GB you already have, adding more RAM won't help performance all that much.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

As @Needfuldoer mentioned support for different various modules can be rough, while we have seen many improvements in the DDR4 generation of RAM, which may allow for the system to run in dual channel to full capacity regardless, thhere will always of course be increased CPU overhead as the system is going to need to perform extra work to keep track of the where that data is, and the unbalanced load that is placed on the modules.

Running two separate kits can also cause issues due to the different timing, and latency that said kits support.

If at all possible it is ideal for you to run two sticks from the same kit of the same capacity.
