Just got my new PC, Windows keeps blackscreening and freezing

It does this from the second boot, after trying to install drivers and the PC reboots. I've reinstalled windows a few times, but it does this from the 2nd boot every single time. I don't know if it's a driver issue or something else, but I've even connected my monitor to the on-board graphics in case it's a GPU issue, but that doesn't help either.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Hi buddy,

 

When the PC blacks out, does the PC reboot or do you need to power cycle it?

 

If its the latter, before power cycling, is the PC still on / responsive? A good way to tell is to hit the 'num-lock' or 'caps-lock' key and see if the keyboard led turns on and off.

 

Usually a PC that's black screened but is still working just fine without a display will respond to numlock key hits.

 

When your in Windows (and its working) search for Event Viewer, then  navigate to Windows Logs > System. See below for screen shot snipping

 

 

You'll see from mine, its just a list of every event Windows has logged. Now, most of it is useless gibberish but you might see a red error or amber warning that might shed a little more light on the situation.

 

Next time in black screens, take note of the exact time and then when your back in Windows, look at the Event Viewer, scroll down to the time of the crash and see what's what.

Forgot to say, you'll almost certainly see a big red 'Critical' whinging about not being shut down properly. This is ok and normal! Its anything untoward in the run up to that.

Update: I think it's a weird faulty GPU issue. When I disconnected my 5070ti, the problem goes away. It's past business hours here, so I'll have to contact the store I got it from tomorrow.

What happens if you remove the GPU and use onboard graphics ?

Do you have another GPU you can use for testing ? Even an older one would do the trick.

Final update: I left my PC on overnight running windows update and driver updates through Gigabyte's software, and left my GPU unplugged.

In the morning, I contacted customer support and arranged to have my PC looked at, then, just in case something had changed, powered my GPU again. It now works.

Good part, I do in fact have a functioning GPU.

Bad part, I still have no idea what the problem was.
