Fried NVMe Drive

Go to solution Solved by Tetras,

A burned M.2 drive is unlikely to be repairable and not usually cost effective anyway.

I loaned my old computer to a friend a while back & we just concluded that the SSD crapped out. We were able to boot into the Windows installer & accessed diskpart, where we then plugged in another thumb drive to verify that it was actively registering the devices & the SSD never showed up. Upon removing it, there was some kind of mildly adhesive residue on the sticker above both the memory and the controller on the drive, with a notable lack of the substance above the empty space of the PCB. There does not appear to be any damage to the PCIe interface on either end. This would suggest that it experienced significant thermal stress for long enough to partially melt the sticker on the SSD. My friend never used this computer for anything that would create that kind of load, and even then that doesn't explain why it wouldn't just throttle or crash before that kind of damage occurred. Whatever the case, the thing is cooked & I don't have the tools to attempt tinkering with its individual components. Should I even bother with sending it to a repair person, or just snag a replacement & move on?
