So my portrait monitor (Dell U2415, 1920 x 1200) just spoilt yesterday, and I'm on the market for a new monitor. So far, I've taken a look at the LG DualUp (16:18, and pretty high above my budget), and Asus ProArt 24-inch (16:10, but still more expensive than regular 16:9 24-inches). Use-case wise, mainly reading documents and web browsing (for now). Theoretically, I could bump up the budget and get a monitor with a higher refresh rate for gaming, but it seems pretty pointless for a portrait monitor.

Just a couple questions:

1. Is 1920 x 1200 a game-changer? Or can I just stick with the normal 1920 x 1080 aspect ratio? There's so few monitors doing 16:10 these days, and all the available options tend to be around $100 more than regular 16:9 monitors with similar features.

2. Anyone has had experience with PbP, but top and bottom on a portrait monitor? Do monitors' PbP settings even support such a weird setup? This is a WFH setup, so I'm running two monitors (1 in portrait, 1 in landscape). I usually do work straight from the work laptop, but on days when I need some extra screen estate, I'm thinking if I can do connect and take up just a half of the portrait monitor, effectively 5:16 (assuming I'm still getting a new 16:10 monitor). Sounds good on paper, but not sure if it will just look distracting in real life.

Thanks!

You have a 19:10 monitor right now. Do you need/use the additional horizontal space it gives you in portrait mode? Would it be worth +$100 for you to keep it?

If you go from 1200 x 1920 to 1200 x 960 that's 5:4 (or 16:12.8), not 5:16

~edit: or do you mean to go to 600x1920? Not sure that would even be supported.

I assume you mean 16:10, not 19:10. Haha honestly, the problem that I'm currently facing is that I don't have a 16:9 24-inch for comparison, so I can't tell. I do know that a 27-inch 16:9 would be too tall for me (I rotated my 27-inch monitor) so 24 inch is still the sweet spot.

You're right, I meant 1200 x 960, I had a brain fart moment.

Do you have any experience with the LG DualUp? Honestly, it seems like a really cool concept and the flexibility of running 2 x 24 inch setups (top and bottom) sounds pretty enticing.

Oops, yeah 😅

I also have an older 24" 16:10 and 27" 16:9, so I can't even give you my subjective impression.

You could maybe try something like a tiling window manager to artifically restrict programs to 1920x1080 to simulate it.
