Buying a battery for an old laptop

Ooh.. Thats a hard one. I get your concern with your past experience, but I so often just go with the third parties. I think that MicroCenter and iFixit, but as seen in this case, not everything is available in those places. I often find digging for a lot longer will find more reliable results, as I found on this site, recommended by someone in the higher-ups of the Dell Forums.

The TL;DR is to dig a bit longer to find things like this recommended here on the Dell Forums.

So I have a Dell Latitude E5440 with an i5-4200U. The battery seems to be on its last legs, which is to be expected considering the laptop is 12 years old. I only get a few hours of charge when doing basic tasks and lately it seems to not even hold a charge properly when totally powered down.

The laptop itself still works great and I would prefer not to replace the whole thing, but I'd like to replace the battery if possible. The battery in question is a CXF6641.

It doesn't look like you can buy this model of battery any more straight from Dell (which is understandable). There are a lot of ebay listings for supposedly compatible batteries but they mostly look dubious to me.

So my question is, do any of you know of a good trusted source for batteries for older laptops?

I'm having more fun than you 😠

Newegg sells this battery here, it seems like it is the right model for your device. Best bet on this sort of thing is to dig a little on Amazon, find some model numbers, and look those up on trusted storefronts. That's worked for all of my projecting needs for as long as I can remember. Granted, this may not work so well for more obscure parts, and I was honestly surprised it took me as brief a time as I did to find this.

I ask mainly because a couple years ago, my mother-in-law bought a new battery for her Dell laptop from one of these Amazon third-party sellers, and even though it listed support her model of laptop and was physically compatible, it ended up being bad and fried her laptop. So I am a little gun shy about buying one of these from a random third-party seller on Amazon or Newegg without a specific recommendation.

Hmm, that's a tricky proposition. $80 is a bit of a tough sell when I could just get a whole-ass replacement laptop for not too much more than that (considering I only paid $130 for this laptop back in 2021).

Thanks for doing a little digging, I appreciate the help.
