Hi everyone!

I'm looking at building/ buying a new PC to upgrade my current one as it is not able to run newer gaming titles anymore 😮‍💨

I was originally looking at these two prebuilt pcs from a local retailer in Australia;

https://www.centrecom.com.au/centre-com-dark-knight-ryzen-5-7600-rx-7800-xt-gaming-pc-with-windows-11-license

https://www.centrecom.com.au/centre-com-view-ryzen-7-5700x-rtx-4070-super-gaming-pc-with-windows-11-license

But somebody on r/buildapc suggested the list below.

I'm really just after a pc that can run new and upcoming titles at 1440p ~100hz. If this build is a bit overkill for that I'm fine with that, just looking for a good deal that will play new titles comfortably for the next few years.

I've heard and read that the 5070 is underwhelming but from what I've seen it seems to perform quite well, so I don't quite understand the dissatisfaction people have with it. The 4070 super I believe is a little pricier than the 5070 at the moment and I've also seen the RX 7800XT but I don't know much about it.

The 2TB storage is plenty for me especially as I have another 1TB from my current pc that I will throw into this one.

I don't need any extra peripherals or anything, just the new computer.

Honestly this part list seems too good to be true especially compared to the pre-builts I linked above so I just wanted some feedback on it!

Thank you!

The 5070 isn't that bad, no. It performs pretty good at 1440p, can do 4K decently (especially upscaled) and is relatively power efficient, but the lack of uplift from the 4070/4070 Super, the price and the 12GB of VRAM are all against it. The 9070 / 9070 XT have been much more popular, from what I've seen, but for the right price I'd still accept a 5070.

Hi thank you so much for your response!

I can see a Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 9070 16 GB for $1049 so $150 more than the 5070 originally in my list. Would you consider that a worthy upgrade?

I see a lot of people criticizing the 12GB VRAM on the 5070 but I'm not sure if it's worth another $150 AUD for the 16GB 9070.

*edit. Sorry it's actually only $50 more than the 5070, maybe it is a worthy upgrade.

Not an easy decision for me.

Raster is faster on the 9070, ray tracing is faster on the 5070 (for now, the 4GB of VRAM could impact that in the longer-term), power efficiency and consumption is similar, nvidia's upscaling tech still wins (though FSR4 is much better than FSR3). Davinci overall score on Puget is higher on the 5070 (not hugely so, AMD does pretty good with Davinci).

Hmmm, I think I probably value the 4GB of VRAM and raster over ray tracing and upscaling tech from nvidia.

Your insight has been very helpful here, thank you.

If I could also ask, is there anything else that stands out about my parts selection? I'm still quite new to all pc parts and building, so I don't want to make any critical mistakes lol

Nothing really

PSU is a lil overkill and you could get a 750w

If you dont plan on using 2 monitors I'd get a 7500F over a 7600 cause its the same without an iGPU

I'd also wouldnt get that ssd as a bootdrive (personal opinion cause it isnt bad per se) and rather an sn770 but that is a lil more expensive as well

If you disagree with anything I've said tell my why with logic not feeling

If you wanna correct smb do so with logic not anecdotes and feelings

Thanks for your input!

I actually am using two monitors, I didn't mention it as I didn't think it would affect my options as my current pc handles it fine, my bad for that!

Crucial is the only brand from my list that I've had a good amount of experience with aha and am pretty happy with their performance, however I do really appreciate your suggestion and will look into it as an alternative before I pull the trigger.

GPU clearance on the case isn't huge (330mm). If you went with a 9070 TUF, for example, I don't think it would fit in the case. I often spec Antec's CX600M in micro-atx builds, but I don't know if they're available in Aus. Lian Li 207 is another option with longer GPU support (compact case, but supports up to ATX), though have to watch the PSU size with that one.

I'd agree with the above about the SSD, I'd try to avoid QLC drives for a boot drive and it doesn't have great rated endurance. If you like Crucial, the T500 is often on offer and is a much better drive for that use. There's a spreadsheet on NewMaxx's reddit here, which is helpful for comparison:

The PSU is fine, but the GL is what I'd consider a tier down on 10 year units (warranty on the GL is 5 year). If you google "SPL's PSU tier list" it is pretty extensive.

I'm definitely not attached to the case in any way and it looks like both the Antec and Lian Li are available in Aus so I'll look into both of them.

Thanks for the clarification with the drives, I'll have to sus out the T500 and good to know about the warranty on the psu, it wasn't something I considered so I'll make sure to read up on the psu tier list.

Thank you so much for all your advice. I feel like I'm on the right path to picking my best components and I really appreciate everything you've suggested and helped with! 😁
