Budget (including currency): 250€

Country: Germany

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Stardew Valley

Hi everyone,

My girlfriend plays exclusively Stardew Valley. She uses a ton of mods and some areas are quite laggy.

Her current PC:

- ryzen 5 3600

- 32GB DDR4 3000

- RX470 4GB

- 2TB WD Black NVME SSD

- 1440p 60Hz monitor

I am thinking of getting her a new or used 5700X3D or 5800X3D.

I have not investigate it but I think the CPU is the bottleneck.

Does someone have experience with CPU performance of Stardew? Does it like 3D V-cache?

Somehow I am too stupid to find CPU benchmarks for Stardew.

Best,

MPX

It depends entirely on the mods she uses and how many of them.

Stardew Valley is typically more of a CPU game. It can easily be played on an integrated GPU afterall. But if you start modding animations, graphics, textures and the likes, that's a different story.

Personally never used more than a handful of mods, so I never had an issue with lag...

Looking online... Honestly her current specs should be plenty. Seen posts of people with much older and crappier PCs run 300 to 600 mods just fine.

It could be mod incompatibility instead of just needing a better PC...

I would definitely check her system resources while playing first to know what her bottleneck is. If any.

2. My game still lags—what can I do?
If you're still experiencing lag, try adjusting the mod's memory settings in the config file to better match your system's capabilities. Also, check for other mods that might be conflicting and update them to the latest versions.

Could simply be a configuration issue where the mods are running out of memory, because the config doesn't let them use more than X GB.

Yeah that system should have no problem at all running stardew with HEAPS of mods. This is most definitly a mod configuration issue.

Either way PER CORE cpu usage and gpu usage with msi afterburner during game as well as ram usage.

Simply because this game runs on a potato so nobody bothered to benchmark it as you can run this game no sweat on like 20 year old machines.

The issues happen when mods conflict and cause loops, memory leaks,... So depending on what all she uses and how well kept is (up to date, constant new mods,...) it can easily get out of hand and NO hardware will fix these software issues

I'd find it very hard to believe her PC is having issues, it's likely some of the mods not playing nicely with each other.

I played StarDew with 4 or 5 mods perfectly fine on an Intel i7 1255u/Integrated graphics and 32GB of RAM.

My partner was using an i5 9600k, 64GB of RAM and an RTX 3060 with the same mods, no issues.

Thanks everyone for the quick replies!

I have installed Afterburner in her PC and checked the desert were it completely breaks down:

And I was able to test her save on another PC with a 5800X3D and RX6800 16GB in the same area:

I think she might have a VRAM issue.

(Apart from the mods being badly optimized or somehow incompatible.)

Also, performance degrades to 2fps on the fast pc after 30min in that area.

Not sure how I would identify the problematic mod without spending hours. She has hundreds.
