My Laptop (ZBook Studio G4) won't boot sometimes and also some things messed up or crashes every 1.5-1.75 hours.

My laptop (HP ZBook Studio G4) having problems following these issues (All of them are not an GPU-retated issue):

1. Windows couldn't boot sometimes, it freezes at black screen or even freezes at welcome screen. otherwise it boots fine.
2. QEMU-KVM on Linux crashes with segfault core dumped sometimes and usb tablet stops working sometimes.
3. The browser UI messed up to black sometimes then reverted (but not all of the time).
4. VMware video output remains black after starting VMware VMs sometimes (but not all of the time).
5. Windows installation will fail sometimes

I tried different BIOS versions (latest from 2024 and one from late 2022), disabling hyperthreading, disabling turbo boost, etc but nothing worked. I also tried using different power outlet on AC Power Adapter but nothing worked.

As last resort. I tried stressing test my laptop via Memtest86+, Prime95, FurMark, OCCT (Both CPU and Power) for 2 hours. but there is no errors on stress tests. I don't have much money to buy an new laptop or buy an new motherboard.

Specs:

CPU: i7-7700HQ
GPU: Quadro M1200
RAM: 16GB RAM DDR4
Storage: 512GB M.2 SSD

Check event viewer under system. Check for critical errors. Even if you can't get memory errors it could be that. There's also a significant chance that it could be SSD related. You could try replacing the SSD first to see if it helps. I would still check event viewer first.

I checked event viewer under critical errors, but there are no cpu-retated or ram-retated or whea-retated errors. only crash dump driver retated and other driver retated, and it is not retated to SSD or drivers.

What do you mean? No critical errors what so ever? Also what do you know, why are you asking then? Post the errors please 😉

To run VMware, virtualization features in the BIOS must be enabled:

  • VT-x (Virtualization Technology): This must be enabled. For the ZBook Studio G3 (a close relative), this setting is found under F10 Setup > Advanced > System Options > Virtualization Technology (VTx). The G4 likely has a similar menu.
  • VT-d (Direct I/O Virtualization): If you need features like GPU passthrough, VT-d should also be enabled, typically in the same BIOS menu.
