Building a New home server for self hosting, home assistant, plex, file storage, open-webui, frigate, and some ai training

Budget (including currency): $3000 USD

Country: united states

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: New home server for self hosting, home assistant, plex, file storage, open-webui, frigate, and some ai training

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

Hey everyone! I'm working on a dual-purpose upgrade within a $3000 budget and would appreciate feedback or suggestions on optimizing. Here's what I'm aiming for

My requirement for home server

  • * be able to run AI/ML applications like open-webui, frigate, and light model training
  • * home assistant
  • * plex server(4k with hardware transcoding)
  • * 24/7 uptime with decently quiet (server stays in study room)
  • * OS: ubuntu server
  • * no RGB required
  • * no need for Wi-Fi The below is the setup charGPT gave me, but it's way over my budget
  • * I'm not sure if I need a rackmount chesis now, since I'll be moving in 3 months and I'll buy a rack after that.

Below is the partial setup that chatGPT gave me, but it's way over my budget

Please don't take advice from ChatGPT. It's fancy autocomplete, not an all-knowing oracle.

Build a new gaming PC with a 3090 and AM5 motherboard, sell your 3070, and use your old gaming PC's parts for your new home server. Do your AI stuff on the new gaming PC.

You'll get more storage for your money if you buy recertified drives from a vendor like ServerPartDeals, just get an extra to keep as a "cold spare".

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

I might need my server to run my AI applications like open-webui and frigate, I also need a GPU for PLEX decoding. They need to run 24/7.  I'm not sure if I can do that in my server without a gpu

Can you not use Quick Sync in an Intel iGPU for decoding?

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.
