Summary

The article discusses the development of a "Datacenter City", Scala AI City, a massive data center complex in Eldorado do Sul, Brazil, which is set to become Latin America's largest digital infrastructure. With an initial investment of R$ 3 billion and a projected energy consumption of up to 4.75 GW, the project promises significant economic benefits, including job creation. However, it faces environmental concerns due to the high demand for energy and water, especially in a region prone to climate-related issues like droughts and floods. The company claims it will use available renewable energy(which is the majority in the country) and water-free cooling.

Quote

"The dream is to build a city. The eventual plan is to have up to 4,750 MW, with consumption equivalent to that of the entire state of Rio. In the world, there is nothing like it; the largest project I am aware of is one with around 1,500 MW announced... It would require an investment from us on the order of US$ 50 billion, and it would be a project for ten, twenty years..."

My thoughts

I'm excited. Brazil has enourmous potential for such projects, having about 90% of its energy grid being renewables and the most resilient internet infrastructure in the planet. Its an opportunity for the country to further develop technologically and expand into new markets
