Hey Guys, I just want to pick out your brain. Should I swap out a R7 3800XT for a R5 5600x? Seeing online the 3800x is still selling close to 100 quid here in UK ebay while the 5600x is around 70. I am using the PC exclusively for 1080p gaming as off now. Also planning to pair it with either a 6800xt or 6900xt. Which is a better processor. Just thought a newer chip mightbe  better. I already have the 3800xt planning to sell it to get a 5600x.

If you're already processor swapping, I wouldn't stop at a 5600x if you're already on a 3800XT. If you're going to do a drop in upgrade, look for a 5700x3D or 5800x3D instead.

What games do you actually play?

Builder/Enthusiast/Overclocker since 2012 with a focus on SFF/ITX since 2014.

If you're just gaming, and can do it at a profit, it could be worth it. The 5600X is faster for gaming pretty much across the board.

With that said, it isn't a ton faster. 5700X3D or 5800X3D would be better for actually getting a meaningful uplift.

Yeah, if you look at it from the perspective of price vs. performance increase vs. raw price to performance, the 5700X3D probably makes sense.

That said, in this case where OP could basically get paid to get the 5600X, I can see the argument for just getting the 5600X.

I'm having more fun than you 😠

Thanks for the reply. I was initially thinking about the x3d chips. However, they a bit out of the budget. They run 200-250 here in the UK. Meanwhile, getting the 5600x now gives me money back and will give me some performance. And I can pool the money gained to start saving for an x3d chip. For context, this is a system for my nephew. Current setup is is a the 3800 xt cooled with a bequite dark rock pro 4, 16gb 3200mhz corsair LPX have another set of 16gb 3200 coming in the mail. Currently has a GTX 1050 Ti but will be upgrading it soon. As for the board,  he has an MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX, will swap it soon as well with an MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk that I got for cheap as listed untested; fingers crossed hoping it works. He mainly plays esports titles and mostly plays Valorant. He gets around 120-150 fps with the current setup. He has a Viewsonic 27-inch 1080p 144Hz monitor. I am trying to get him to play other games. He has played Cyberpunk on my system and is enjoying it so far. Hence, trying to upgrade his setup.

So got the rx6900xt, the gpu is bottleneck by the cpu playing valorant at 1080p. Though getting over 200 fps. Would the r5 5600x fair better? Hehehe. On other more demanding titles though it's running great. Getting 90-100 in cyberpunk max quality rt off and without any upscaling. And system turned out great. The fans I got from temu looks like lianli uni fans regular and reverse are available if anyone wants. Argb and pwm as well. The 3 in front lock into each other. I think they were 27 quid for a pack of 3 for the ones you can locking together and 21 quid I think for the ones that dont.

This is only CPU1 which is a single CPU core youre looking at, not the CPU as a whole, now, i reckon youre still bottlnecked by your CPU, or possibly something else, but 80% GPU usage isnt too bad actually. Plus its a game that can run at high FPS running at 1080p, so its going to be one of the games that youll be most CPU bound in
