Hi guys

So I bought a 2nd hand 2080TI as it was sold as "Fully functional and tested"

So it does work ok but as soon as I run an intensive task it sounds like its going to explode and the hotspot is at 105 degrees in no time. I didn't really want to leave it longer for obvious reasons. So it needs thermal pads replacing. Last time I bought one of ebay it was the same situation and the guy gave me a small refund which almost covered the replacement pads and install by an engineer  (I know its probably easy but I can't be arsed!) that I know. I was happy enough with that. I explained the situation to this seller and I think his response is BS but I wanted to check here first:

As mentioned in the listing, the GPU was fully tested before being sent out and showed no issues during those tests, including under load. It was sold as a non-returnable item, which was clearly stated, and the serial number was recorded. Regarding the high temperatures you’re experiencing — this specific model, the Gigabyte RTX 2080 Ti Turbo Edition, is known to run hot under load due to its blower-style cooler design. This isn’t a fault with the card itself but rather a design limitation. There’s actually a helpful video that highlights this very issue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1BO2tHyOMkIn cases with limited airflow or during intensive tasks like gaming or AI processing, it’s not unusual for this model to reach higher temps. That said, a set of replacement thermal pads costs around £8, and it’s a relatively common maintenance step for high-performance GPUs — especially older ones.I appreciate that you'd like to keep the card, but given the circumstances and the fact that the issue is due to the original cooler design, I won’t be offering a refund or partial refund in this case. The card is functioning as expected for its model.

Thanks

I don't know if the noise levels or hotspot you're encountering are what you'd expect from the card, but the seller is not wrong about the blowers.

They were known for being hot and noisy, which is part of why they don't really sell cards like that anymore, apart from for workstation use.

They're generally avoided for serious users and just purchased for novelty value.

I miss me a good ol' blower card. Asrock's Creator and MSI's Aero series gives me hope that the meme is still alive.

For blower designs, this one's pretty bad. Heavy I/O plate resistance being a bad sign and a flaw on a lot of these cards over the years.

Surely hitting 105 degrees in about 10 seconds is a real red flag?

No thats kinda just mostly normal. These cards were exceptionally bad

For a 7 year old card, that is pretty normal. Paste and pads dry out and need replacing eventually. Add to that a blower style cooler and you get what you have, hot and loud.

My ASUS 2080 blower hot spot was higher than that after only a couple of years.  As it has no back plate you can see the pad oil wicking through the PCB.

I think the problem is the stock fan curve is garbage to keep the noise level sane, as you can 100% the fan and it will still barely get under 80C under load.

Guys,

My issue is more so about the fact that it was sold as "fully tested" and he claimed to have done it under heavy load which just can't be true.

If he had said sold as seen, or not fully tested I would have accepted it but I would not have bought it had I known it was not in fact fully tested, certainly not to any standard. I suspect he just switched it on for a few hours and that was the extent of his testing.

I got my mate who is an engineer by trade to pop in round last night. He said he can the pads must be completely gone and that he wouldn't even put that card through a full benchmark when he heard the noise and it going from 50 degrees to 105 in about 10 seconds. I think it would burn out very fast and then would be useless.

Its gonna cost me £40 to have the pads done and I know its not a complex job etc and I'm not arsed about the money. I just hate it when sellers flog stuff online saying its fully tested when its clearly not. Of course he has put no returns and would not even entertain it as you have seen from the email. Its very rare that I have had to complain about tech I bought from eBay. Last time was also a 2080Ti with exactly the same issue and the seller was more than happy to have the card back or pay a bit towards the pad replacement. This guy showed zero flexibility. Even if no returns he could have made a token gesture and I would have been fine. Event the £8 he said about the pads, but to brick wall me is just piss poor.

I'll just be leaving neutral/negative feedback and that will annoy him more than £8 I suspect. Or neutral.

I get that I really do but there is loud and there is loud!

Also even with old cards of mine they have got up to that heat after a while but this one is literally within about 10-20 seconds. I opened the Last of Us and by the time I had got to the menu screen it was at 105 degrees, not even the shader building or the game itself!!

The card is functional, fully tested by reasonable definition, and blower cards are just loud. I do feel bad for the seller getting a negative review after selling a card that works, depending on how much he sells it's likely more damaging than the cost of the card.

Under a heavy load its totally expected for any air cooler to saturate within 10-20 seconds.  Blower cards being the worst as they have the smallest heatsinks for the load they are expected to dissipate.

If the fan isn't constantly jumping between ~50% to 100% under a heavy load, its still working within expected parameters.  This is what clued me in with mine as it was obvious the BIOS fan curve was no longer able cool adequately.

  • 2 weeks later...

Decided to get rid the end.

Chap allowed to be do a part ex. 2080TI and £100 for a 3080 and its in really good nick. The cheap who I done the deal with very appreciate of the honesty and said he would not have accepted it as a refund. Yes it only needed some new paste in ne end but it just confirm what I thought about the testing literally being switching it off on

This 3080 will do now until the new GTA comes out, if its even in my lifetime! I am really starting to wonder. From the clips i have seen the graphics are good but not jaw dropping by any means. I am expecting something amazing given how long it.

Wish I had never sold my 3090,. Don't know what I was thinking. I started off  with a 4080 years ago but that really was overkill as there were no decent LLMs then even.

The 3090 was a beast for gaming and Ai but got a really good price for i and don't game that much but the 3080 seems to handle everything. Cant do 4k well for some games . Last of  us at 1440p with everything at ultra gets 60fpbs so I am happy with that.

Some of the AMD offering are temping as they offer more ram at roughly the same price point, but gaming wise the same 3080 does seem notably better.

Next year  I ill be buy a totally new machine. Hopefully more GPus will go to gamers and not mining farms. That would be a nice!  The only way to guarantee a decent GPU on launch is to buy a new PC!!
