Same reason am4 and am5 can use the same coolers/mounts

Makes it easier to not have mutliple different sized mounts and just have a "one size fits most" mount

If you disagree with anything I've said tell my why with logic not feeling

If you wanna correct smb do so with logic not anecdotes and feelings

In the old days we were able to use older Lga775 coolers on some Lga1155 and 1151 mobos like on the Asrock B75 Pro 3. The motherboards literally had 4 mounting holes for each platform. It would be nice to see a staying universal cooling mount for all manufacturers and processor families at some point. In the image you can see 775 mounts on 1155.

AM4 is the same size as AM3 which is the same size as AM2 which IIRC was the same size and era as LGA775. I presume AMD did it back on AM2 (when nobody bought their CPUs) so it'd be easier for cooler manufacturers to support ttheir platform.

im like 87% sure am4/3/2 is rectangular while 775 is square what
maybe 2 holes align diagonally or on one side but the other two should not

(from top to bottom am4 am2 am3)
IDK they all square to me

Ooh you were talking about the mounting screw distance/layout

Still not the case 🙂 (that they arent different but they are rectangular that is true)

image.thumb.jpeg.7d34d8fb16275d8f2dddf3a2fa8cf309.jpeg

This is LGA 775 and still looks like a rectangle using the brackets/mounting screw holes

Notice the VRMs (or capacitors i cant remember which of the 2 it is now)

The vertical ones fit perfectly while the horizontal ones have a gap ie one side is larger therefore it is a rectangle as well and not a square

ooooh i understand now,

you mean the fan mount screws, so you remove the am4 mount screws, and supply your own threaded rods into the backside of the fan mount points and shove it on.
yes there is a very good reason for this, because the wraith uses a 80mm fan which utilizes a 71.5mm square mounting pattern, lga775 is 72mm square mounting pattern. That's pretty much why. it is close enough that with tolerances it will fit.

Going by this, the most reasonable explanation is that both AMD and Intel use same OEM factory for their stock heatsinks. To which, its cheaper for factory to have one process for carving heatsinks instead of multiple. Intel hasn't changed their stock cooler size in 20 years, just adjusted mounting to fit. I remember it being "hot" (pun intended) topic few years ago when it became clear that stock cooler wasn't enough for even non-K i7s.
