I actually have some good news here, I set the BIOS to enforce all limits on CPU and the problem has at present gone completely away. I'm going to run a bios update in a few more tests and hopefully not have to worry about this again. Thank you for the insight!

You could make it stable if you're lucky, but if it has degraded the damage is permanent.

Will it degrade further, now when it has started? Only time will tell.

Thing is the RMA time period is not infinite. If you decide to keep it you might regret it, if it starts to fail after the RMA / warranty time period.

I would've if possible return it to the seller, ask for a refund and pick a high-end 12th gen instead.

Anyway, good luck to you

Has or is anyone running into an issue where the game crashes when shaders compile on game launch? Here ill just copy what i sent to game science support.

I went to play the game again after the most recent update, 1.0.16.18901, and now the game crashes on every launch during shader compilation. I play on PC using steam. sometimes it gives me an actual error that says my graphics memory is out. other times it doesn't, and it always makes it to a different point in the process. I had task manager up during a launch and its not maxing out GPU memory, it peaks CPU for afew seconds only when the game very first open.

I have tried the following troubleshooting steps already.

-Verify game files on steam

-reinstall game

-roll back GPU driver

My build is as follows:

- Intel Core i7-14700KF 3.4 GHz 20-Core Processor

- Asus ROG STRIX Z790-F GAMING WIFI II ATX LGA1700 Motherboard

-G.Skill Trident Z5 RGB 64 GB (2 x 32 GB) DDR5-6400 CL32 Memory

- Asus TUF GAMING OC GeForce RTX 4070 Ti 12 GB Video Card

I should mention that it works just fine on my Laptop on both the iGPU or the ASUS Laptop 3060 GPU.

Uh oh

Out of video memory error while compiling shaders is one of the typical signs for a degraded Intel cpu, and yours is one of the models. Google it and you'll see.

Have you tried other games, especially Unreal 5 games that needs to compile shaders in the beginning?

Are you sure you have the latest bios with the latest 0x12B microcode, and using one of the Intel default profiles?

Real quick, hypothetically speaking this is the case, what do you think my best recourse of action is? Is there anything feasibly I can do that doesn't involve replacing the CPU and probably the motherboard with it?

If it is a degraded cpu then nothing will repair it. The microcode updates are meant to prevent it, updating the bios should be the first thing to do when getting a new pc with those 13th 14th gen cpus.

If it is degradation it could over time get worse until it fails completely.

Is the cpu brand new?

Some resellers can scam customers, selling a returned already degraded cpu. They could just put it in a pre-built pc to sell it, or if the cpu was returned to them with almost intact packaging just tape it and resell it. Amazon is such place where customers have bought what they thought was brand new cpu.

Test your cpu some more.

The symptoms are varied depending on how far the degradation has set in.

Test more Unreal 5 games where it needs to compile shaders. Perhaps there are some free demos/benchmarks you can try with?

Another symptom is trouble unpacking large archives. Also some installers unpack, like the Nvidia driver install. When downloading games from Steam some might be compressed alot and unpacks on the fly, and could fail with a degraded cpu.

Another symptom is audio problems, sound pop crackling and such.

Not all cpus are affected.

The i3 and non-K i5 of the 13th and 14th gen are unaffected (according to Intel), and the 12th gen are unaffected aswell.

Laptop cpus should also be unaffected, although there are some suspicious reports here and there.

Your motherboard should be fine. The degradation issue is for the cpus.

What you can do is to RMA it to Intel.

Or ask the reseller for a refund if possible, and buy one unaffected cpu model, like a high-end 12th gen perhaps?

You right, it's only been a few months. I'll get it traded out and replaced. Should be good since the bios update is installed now.
