Linus said that they had had a formal, written warranty policy before selling any backpack multiple times, like on the most recent WAN Show and a less recent one. I checked and this doesn't seem to be true. I think Linus might have remembered it wrong.

According to Wayback Machine and archive.today, OG backpack was launched on ~Aug 4, 2022. Linus first talked about briefly why there's no formal warranty on Aug 5, then tried to explain that in more detail and announced the plan for the "Trust me bro guarantee" limited lifetime warranty on Aug 12. The warranty was finalized on Aug 18.

Also compare what Luke said about the backpack warranty back in 2022 (16:29 - 17:00) to what he says now (3:24:23 - 3:24:35). Luke should've said "idk" even more often than he already does I guess?

I agree with what Luke said back then. The outrage was not as unjustified as they now believe.

(Should've written this as a Youtube/Floatplane comment under this week's WAN VOD but my Youtube account has gone for ages and it's not the time for me to resubscribe to Floatplane yet)

Thank you for the correction, I also remembered the warranty to be finished before the start of the online sales.
Ultimately, the outrage about warranty is still unjustified.
It seriously doesn't matter what is written down, the company employes lawyers to write in loophole so they can act as they want.
It's always up to the company to keep their promises and if they don't want to, they don't do it.

A little anecdote from Palit, the GPU company.
I bought their RTX3060 TI something OC Edition with, according to Palits website, a copper cooling plate. When I liquid cooled this fucker the base plate exploded because it was aluminium. I reached out to their support, explained them, what was wrong and they were like "you opened it = no warranty, no service, you're a bad boy."
After a few back and forths where I explained them multiple times, there would be no other way to discover their false advertising and I'd involve a lawyer, they answered: "I'm happy to hear from your lawyer, have a good day"
(btw, I didn't expect much from them, just a new cooler, not the whole GPU)
Obviously I didn't involve a lawyer and the card lost 70% resell value and is running underclocked at 85°C.

backpacks were launched start of agust, but only shipped end of september.. so i presume that's where the difference in memory comes from?

either way, IMO this thing is hilareously overblown for no reason other than to have *something* for drama queens to feed on. i encounter youtubers that do MINDBLOWING things for merch that would have LMG (or specificly linus, because people still dont understand how companies work) absolutely crucified, and they just ignore it away and nothing ever comes of it.

and yet.. people like projectfarm get backlash from reviewing LMG stuff positively, because it obviously means he was paid off, and it cant possibly be good kit, right?

the thing about the memory hole detail of recent wan show about the warranty is that.. yes he misremembered, but he's still there talking his mind about it. the only alternative is that WAN show becomes a scripted tech news show and we have no more insight.

should they have put their warranty in writing from the start? yes, absolutely.

should it have become this amount of outrage? hell no, it's ridiculous al the way around.

did putting the warranty in writing make any difference at all to what you can expect from a warranty case? not in the slightest.

in the end this is why terren tong is there, so linus can be vision officer visioning all day doing what he's good at.. and the PR and policies is done by people who are well versed in PR and policies.
