Heyo! I am planning to do an almost complete overhaul of my awful and ancient build, and I wanted to get some feedback before buying all the new parts, since I haven't built a PC in over 7 years.

Here's everything I want to upgrade:

- CPU: Intel i7-8700 -> AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D
- Cooler: Intel stock cooler with 7 y/o paste -> DeepCool AK620 DIGITAL

- Motherboard: Asus PRIME Z370-A -> GIGABYTE X870E AORUS ELITE WIFI7

- RAM: 32GB Corsair (mixed models) -> Kingston FURY Beast 64GB 6000MHz CL30 (2x32GB, Dual Ch.)

An everything I'm planning to keep:

- GPU: RTX 3070 (might upgrade to a 5080 or 5090 in a year or two)

- PSU: Seasonic PX-750

- Case: Cooler Master Obsidian 750D

- Storage 1: WD_BLACK SN850X 1TB (Gen4; x4)

- Storage 2: Kingston A2000 1TB (Gen3; x4)

- Storage 3-6: Four SATA HDDs

My justification for the slightly pricier X870E board is that where I'm at, the price gap between it and the cheaper alternatives isn't that bad. Also, I might consider including my old GTX 1060 for VFIO Passthrough for VMs (not for gaming), and this particular board provides an x4 slot (which is good enough for my use case) at the 5th position, meaning that my main RTX card won't get completely choked for air. But I'll only do this if it doesn't decrease the performance of any of my other PCIe devices (the two NVMe's and the 3070) due to lane sharing.

My main use cases are programming (LOTS of Rust compilation, docker containers, virtual machines, etc...) and a little bit of gaming (minecraft with 200+ mods and high-end shaders, warframe, bg3, vrchat).

Basically I'm just posting this here to get some feedback and make sure I'm not doing anything stupid.

Thanks in advance! 🙂

What is your use case? Do you really need a 9950X3D over a 9800X3D ?

Do you have enough usage outside of gaming to justify the 9950X3D?

The current gen AM5 CPUs are pretty efficient and not bad on power, buuuut, air cooling under full multithreaded load for extended periods is still going to be hot and noisy, are you aware of that possible outcome?

If you only want 2x M.2 slots and a secondary PCIE slot, there are cheaper options that could meet your needs, like e.g. Strix B650E-F.

By the way, do you know if that card will run in a 4 lane slot?

I somehow forgot to include that bit, I updated my original post. Tldr is productivity (coding, VMs, etc..) and some games (minecraft with high end shaders, warframe, BG3). On the productivity side, I could definitely use the 16 cores.

Do you think I should go for an AIO instead? Based on my experience, my setup is never under "constant" full load, but rather shorter bursts of high load that can last anywhere from a few minutes up to an hour, depending on what I'm doing.

The annoying thing here is that I need a specific board that has a full x16 length slot on the 5th position from the top for the second GPU. The one you mentioned only has this slot at the 6th position, which means that my two-slot 1060 would collide with my PSU. Many other boards have one of their secondary x16 slots in the 4th position, but putting the 1060 there would not give the 3070 any breathing room in case its fans turn on.

Btw, I'm still contemplating if I should even bother with the second GPU, or maybe look for alternative solutions instead, like trying to do VFIO passthrough on the integrated GPU...

You could get a motherboard with x16 lanes in the 6th pcie port and use a Gpu raiser.

I have considered that too, but there isn't enough room in my case to mount a GPU vertically. I think I'll just give up on the whole second GPU thing for now, and go with a cheaper mobo.

What case do you have?
