OK, so this video got me thinking about my system. It is even older. The MB is an ASUS Sabertooth 87z. The CPU is a 4770k. Both from 2013. My GPU was upgraded from an EVGA 980 ti to an EVGA 1070 ti. The RAM is Patriot 32GB running at 1600mhz. And, unfortunately, I have no money to spend on upgrading right now. I was entertaining the thought of getting a 1080 ti eventually. But I am now thinking it may be wiser to upgrade the CPU and MB first? And if I do that, I still need to do it on the cheap. And when I do that, it most likely will be needing DDR4 ram as well? Any suggestions?

UPDATE: for those asking about the budget, I guess you could say the cheaper the better. I will only be able to buy one piece at a time, if I am lucky; used. So, MAYBE, $200 here, $200 there, sort of thing. Oh yes, I live in Toronto. And what I am looking to gain by the upgrade is more frames. I play Warzone most often and right now, living in the 60 fps to 85 fps range with my system, depending on what is happening on screen at a given point on the map. My monitor is decent, a MSI Optix G24C 144 hz (I was able to upgrade my main monitor a few years ago to eek out a couple more fps. Before that my monitor was an old Samsung at 60hz so I was never able to go beyond 60 fps when I first started playing Warzone). So if I can get something that gets me up to 100 fps plus in Warzone, I'd be happy.

I mean at this point with how cheap am5 can be going ddr4 is often not a wise spend of money

That depends, AM4 still barely 400$, AM5 you're going at 150$+ unless you're fine with mediocre MB that might not be good with 12+ core CPU.

Not to mention CPU+MB alone for AM5 is already approx 350$, unless you go cheaper 8000 series CPUs which bring it down around below 300$

So what's your actual budget?

2nd hand market 3000 series Ryzen CPUs + mothetboard + RAM go for quite cheap and you may be able to find great deal even on 5000 series as people are switching to AM5.

I would definitely not upograde the GPU before you upgrade that CPU.

You can probably even jump straight to AM5 with Ryzen 5 7500f + board + DDR5 RAM for around ~$300 if that's within your budget. The motherboard will have to be quite basic though.

I am also on a tight budget, but if you are too, i would definitely go for a second hand AM4 and CPU combo, or get both seperately if you cannot find a nice deal.

I wouldn't spend the money to go from a GTX 1070 Ti to a GTX 1080 Ti, is it worth the difference ?

you might be able to go for a new base system and take the GTX 1070 Ti over to the new system if also getting a better GPU is out of your budget.

The AM4 socket is end of life, maybe the last CPU generation (5xxx) might still be too current, you might get lucky finding a second hand 5xxx CPU, if not, don't know about where you live, but you can find very few 3xxx CPUs new here, so you can probably find a lot more of those second hand, and frankly, i don't think a 3600 is a bad way to go, not sure on the DDR4 pricing currently to be honest, but since that is basically end of life i would think that should be not too hard to get.

Do keep in mind it's all end of life, can be cheaper, you're not going to be able to upgrade anything but the GPU.

Going AM5 is probably going to cost quite a bit more, it's a current socket, we're on the second generation CPUs (9xxx) basically, DDR5 is a bit more expensive which is likely also why you might find less second hand, you may get very lucky, but i wouldn't count on it.

Not sure for how many more years AM5 is going to be supported, but you might be able to upgrade the GPU in a few years if you're lucky, maybe when that's end of life and AM6 or whatever they will call it is in its first or second generation, or maybe your financiel situation improved a bit and you can buy a then new CPU.

But basically, the tighter you are on money, the further back you go, and a relatively recent end of life socket is usually the way to go, AMD AM4 and AM5 are popular, they sold more than previous generations, people are loving it, you may be able to find that.

You could also go Intel, but if you can get a nice AM4 build, i would go for that, it might also be a bit easier to cool, uses a little less powqer from what i understand, if that matters to you.

Maybe you can reuse your case and fans for now ?

The GPU market is a bit of a mess right now, for new stuff, but also even high end RTX 30xx and 40xx are going for a lot, they might all be out of your price range, maybe take the GTX 1070 Ti to your new build, or maybe you can find a nice RTX 20xx GPU.

Do keep in mind that you might have to get a newer or more powerful PSU too.

It all depends on your budget and location, i have no idea what they are or mostly what the second hand market is where you are.

AM4 forever!

However, I'd argue a "10k" PC has never been good, especially when new, because lmao wtf you spending all that money on? OMG 🤣

Yep, 1070ti is still good, as long you don't do "Ray tracing" ig. (some games now seem to require it, but I don't really see that as a problem, just put those companies on my never buy list, it's already huge, everyone is welcome to join! 😅)
