Hello,

Relevant part of my spec is this:

* My motherboard is this one: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B450M-MORTAR-MAX/Specification

* My current M2 SSD is this one: https://www.samsung.com/us/business/support/owners/product/980-pro-series-500gb/

* My GPU is this one: https://www.sapphiretech.com/en/consumer/nitro-radeon-rx-6950-xt-16g-gddr6

I'm planning to buy additional M2 SSD, most likely one of those:

1. https://www.x-kom.pl/p/1197069-dysk-ssd-lexar-4tb-m2-pcie-gen4-nvme-nm790-heatsink.html

2. https://www.x-kom.pl/p/691114-dysk-ssd-kingston-4tb-m2-pcie-gen4-nvme-kc3000.html#Opinie

Questions:

1. Will both SSDs work with my motherboard? I am aware that they will not reach their highest speed (especially as one of the M2 ports is slower, IIRC). I'm more interested with whether both of them will function (without significant slowdowns); I should point out, that only one of them should be used at the same time (I'm planning to have Windows partition on one, and Linux on the other).

2. Can using both of them slow down my GPU in any way? I'm asking, because of this (I hope that this PCI slot is not the main PCIe one, on which my GPU is mounted?):

image.thumb.png.1585372e4d8aa82baafe729c48ae4793.png

3. At least one of those M2 slots seems very close to GPU slot (and as you probably know, 6950 is very big); that begs the question, if I choose the one with the heatsink, will that be a problem? Also, worst-case scenario, are SSD heatsinks possible to detach?

Both ssds should work, they shouldn’t slow down your Gpu, and it depends on the ssd for if you can remove the heatsink.

Yes, I know that one of the slot is slower anyway, and that I could buy practically any SSD and it will still throttle.

However, I assume (hope) that this SSD will still be good couple years years from now, at which point I may start thinking about replacing the platform. Also note, that your proposals have much lower TBW, as far as I can tell. I could think about it, if those were say 2x cheaper, but those prices are comparable to Lexar.

Both of them are 2400TBW. Both are top of the line 8 channel DRAM TLC SSD. You will not hit that in 15 years of normal use.

Lexar is 4-channel dramless SSD, based on china controller and NAND.

also Lexar in 4TB version of the NM790 has to little CE lines in controller to Connect all of its NAND. Resulting in random lawendy problems, as well as poor performance in small sample tests

Hm what about this KC3000 (performance-wise)? I'm asking, because I'm kind of limited to X-Kom (as I have a gift card there, that will allow me to finance over half of the price...) and the prices are still similar, except KC3000 has over 3k TBW. The only bad thing I keep hearing about it (but honestly, it goes for others as well), is that they changed revision/manufacturer/whatever and it may have gotten slower at some point.

yes, they swapped NAND for slower one, (the same one  that is in SN850x), but it's still better than NM790 even with the weaker configuration, difference is just 0-5% in most of the workload.
do you need a heatsink? If it will work on PCIe 3.0, it shouldn't get worm, so... and when you buy a new mobo, it will probably have heatsink for M.2 anyway.

I would consider these:
Kingston 4TB M.2 PCIe Gen4 NVMe Fury Renegade 1279zł  heatsink version 1359zł
GOODRAM 4TB M.2 PCIe Gen4 NVMe IRDM PRO 1319zł
Samsung 4TB M.2 PCIe Gen4 NVMe 990 Pro 1339zł
