Upgrade path for my current gaming build

Go to solution Solved by dizmo,

There's no point in upgrading to AM5 in 6 years, I'd just save for AM6 (or possibly 7 by that point).

You'd be buying used, yes? No point in buying hardware that old new.

Welcome to the forum.

This is my current specs:
Ryzen 5 2400g
Rtx 2060 12gb
A320M PRO VD/S V2
16 Gb 2400Hz Ram

Gaming AAA titles, I found that I am mostly CPU bottlenecked at 1080p gaming. I get around 40-50 avg fps and 7-10 1% Low fps in dlss quality on most games. CPU usage is mostly 100%.

I have 2 upgrade strategies in mind:

  1. The best option which won't burn a hole in my pocket is to get a reasonable good AM4 cpu upgrade. Use that for 5-6 years, then upgrade altogether to AM5.

  2. Wait 1-2 years, and upgrade to AM5. In that time, AM5 motherboard, cpus, rams will get a lot cheaper as well.

If going with option 1, then I am thinking of these options:
Ryzen 5 5600, Ryzen 7 5800X, Ryzen 7 5700X3d.

I know, 5700x3d is the best amoung the bunch, but is it worth spending that much, when anyway AM4 is getting obsolete.

I am thinking of getting R5 5600. Its cheaps, still performs well in benchmarks and games.

What upgrade strategy is better ?

Yeah realistically all you need is a better CPU...2060 is still ok...

Depends on price but probably not worth it.

The thing is since it's old... there's probably lots of cheap stuff available new ... why'd you want an old beat up CPU if a few bucks more can get you a new one.

Actually I'd want to buy 32gb DDR4 ram, not because I necessarily need it, but it would be a slight improvement for video editing etc... I don't really plan to get off AM4 anytime soon lol...

(Problem is I can't find any B-dies 🤣)

Yeah, R5 5600 sounds better for the next 4-5 years.
Thanks for the suggestions

You can find NOS where you are? Very rarely do I see older tech going cheaper than used. Used also generally is free from DOA, something you can't guarantee with buying new. CPUs don't really take much of a beating 😉 unless you're Intel and build them improperly.
