Hi, so a bit of background. I have an Unraid NAS with two LSI 9207-8i cards connected to 12 SATA drives. One of my drives recently died, and I bought a new drive to replace it. Except I made a mistake, and accidentally ordered a SAS drive (a ST8000NM0075 Seagate Exos 7E8 8TB) instead of a SATA one.

My question is, what do I need to do/get in order to use the drive? I already tried this random SAS to SATA adaptor connected to a Mini SAS SFF-8087 SATA breakout cable, hoping that because the drive and the LSI card use SAS, having SATA between them shouldn't be an issue cause it should be backwards compatible. However, it didn't get detected. I do have an unused port on one of my LSI cards, which I would be open to using for this single drive if I need to, but I want more knowledgable people to weigh in before I make any more purchases. Any specific product recommendations would also be welcome.

Thanks very much for your help 🙂

why don't you return it and get the right kind drive?

Best option if it's available is return and reorder
If not, kinda depends. SAS is a bit of a mess. Some drives with work with some interposers on some cards in some cases. AFAIK there is no universal solution because that's exactly what SAS seems to run on: guaranteed solutions. Some system integrator will work with a vendor and build a drop in solution, then sell support services. Good money if you can make it in the business.
If you're interested in exploring SAS (a wild ride but one that can yield well if you get a system up and running because SAS tends to be cheaper than SATA for this very reason), you should definitely try using that spare port on the LSI card to see if it will work.
One thing is that the drive may just be dead, but the other is highlighted in this review on the product you linked:

SAS and SATA don't usually mix well.  E.g., usually, a SAS/SATA backplane will support ALL SAS or ALL SATA but not a mix of both.

It is possible that htis extends to the controller hosting the backplane.

I run SAS drives in my servers and SATA in my PCs.  Never the two shall mix.

I also prominently label drives and chassis so I don't mistakenly forget what fits where.
