RTX 5080 at 1080p 240hz - Overkill, should I upgrade to 1440p?

Now call me crazy, but I have a 7800X3D and a 5080. However, I currently have a 1080p monitor that does 240-280hz.

I thought for longevity's sake, I was being smart by upgrading to a high-refresh 1080p monitor (was an old 60hz monitor) but I noticed everyone on another website said I was crazy. I should be playing 1440p minimum. However, I noticed on some games I'm not even cracking 100fps on the highest settings such as Hell Divers 2.

I know future-proofing a PC is impossible but I don't upgrade often, I'd been on a 1080(non-ti) up until February.

Should I upgrade to a 1440p monitor? am I crazy not to?

If you enjoy playing at 1080p, that's up to you.

Personally, I'd find it less visually immersive and 1080p is also likely to be less productive, if you do anything other than gaming.

It's more am I going to lose a significant amount of fps at 1440p? I mean I'm not against the upgrade. What size monitor would you look at? I have provisionally ordered the Xiaomi G Pro 27i

1080p with a 5080 is overkill.  Sure, you will be getting a lot of frames but the sharpness of the image is just so poor compared to 1440p at 27-32''.

I personally have a 9800X3D and overclocked 4080 and I love gaming on my 32'' 1440p 240hz Nano-IPS monitor.

I am a graphics snob and I love my FPS / Smoothness, I will say that I am supported by the fact that my monitor has Gsync but this was always the plan.

There is absolutely no way I would go back to 1080p.

Maybe I'm old, I only notice the sharpness issue when I pay close attention. I do however only sit 2 maybe at most 3 feet away.

I'm hesitant about 32inch as I do occasionally play FPS games, and hate the minimap being so far away from the central part of the screen even on a 27".

Well there you said it! You dont like bigger screens for valid reasons.

So basically keep the 1080p one you have and well enjoy probably a decade of high settings high fps gaming.

Genuinly dont care about not having a 1440p screen its fine. Dont let people make you feel bad about it ever.

Well.. I am 34 and I do.  But we are all different.  I am not here trying to convince you, just sharing my opinion 🙂

Sound like you answered your own questions really.

The FPS games I play don't have a minimap so I that has never been a problem for me 😄  ( Hell Let Loose )

Fyi this is due to game engine limits. A LOT of games can't even properly run at 144fps let alone higher. The ones that can are usually esports games.

Heaps of games can't even get 100fps even on the best hardware and simply never will get to those fps. The  there's others that flat out CRASH from running too fast because the code wasnt made to handle a at the time inconcievable fps (for example gta v explodes around 150-180fps)

What is weird about resolutions, it actually depends more on pixel density and it's easy to get used to it (even 720p probably lol)

For example when I play on my 240hz 1440p 17" laptop (laptop screens always have a crisper picture and better pixel density in my experience) and then go to play on my 1440p 165hz 27" inch monitor I always think "this sure looks pixelated, yikes!"... But only for like 5 minutes then I don't notice it anymore and I think the screen looks brilliant (of course it does, it's an IPS, tuned *by me*...)

Even going back to my Asus 1080p 60hz 27" monitor, same effect, first I think this is gonna be unable and 1080p is really bad... But after 10 minutes I don't see it anymore and am amazed how good this monitor holds up (IPS... *tuned by me* 😉 )...

So clear no from me, all you do with higher resolution monitors is use up resources unnecessarily and things like pixel density, color accuracy, response times, ghosting, etc are far more important...!

High res monitors are the worst for longevity , see above, you're killing performance for not much advantage (if any)

Depending on the games you play, you're spending $1000-$1600 on a GPU who's performance you'll never be able to appreciate at such a low resolution. Was normal a decade+ ago. We've moved on. A $2000+ system useless if you're looking at everything through a $100 1080p monitor (about all a 1080p 240Hz IPS is worth these days).

Don't you find your CPU is a bottleneck? I play at 1440p with a 5080 and 7800x3d and a bunch of the time my GPU is bored and not running at anywhere near 90%. It certainly not all the time with some AAA games but it does happen often. I would think at 1080p your gpu would spend a lot of time running at like 50% and just waisting it's potential. I'm pretty sure even in hell divers 2 my cpu is limiting my fps if I remember correctly. Haven't played it in months. Anyway play how you're happy playing.
