My wife and her sister will be going on a cruise soon and I wanted  to get her a good camera to take with her. I was looking at the insta360 X4,  I  thought she would like that it captures 360 cameras and would make it easy for her to get pictures of her and  her  sister. I  also like that it's waterproof so she can take it in the pool, snorkeling, use it on her seadoo and the boat. But I keep reading mixed  reviews on the video and photo quality and Im hoping  to hear from people that have one and their experiences with it. I would like to stay under 500 for the camera itself if I can but I want something that will last.

I also was looking at the DJI Osmo Action  5 pro, while it doesn't do the 360 photos it looks like it would take good video and photos.

Thank you in advance.

The most tried and true ones are still the gopro's. You can even get older used ones, slap in a new battery and they are good to go. The insta 360 has really poor low light quality due to being a 360 camera with budget camera's in it. The 360 degree angle is also not always what you want.

The dji is nice but overall the last couple gopro's are better in every way. Especially if having stills from a video is important.

If you aren't set on 3D capture, you could just spend $300 on a near-mint Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G and then $200 on large capacity SD card + waterproof case and other accessories to make it more of a "travel camera". 5000 mah battery and hi res cameras. Plus phones are easy for non-tech people.

Dreaming of the day when my brain cell doesn't betray me.

I have a x3, so not too different than the x4. I would advise against it as a general travel camera. It is WAY too wide angle for what most people want to take pictures of. The 360 is cool for about 5 minutes, but gets old really quickly.

Here is a shot to show you just how wide the view is...
