Help to build a very good machine today that will hopefully stay somewhat OK within the next 5 years

Go to solution Solved by Millios,

PSU is overkill 100% and a 850w would be more than fine while letting you upgrade in the future

I would avoid noctua due to being pricey and go with smt from arctic for fans and thermalright for CPU cooling

Unless the HDD is for pics and vids then it would be kind of a waste as for games it just wont do especially modern ones

Motherboard is fine but you can 100% go cheaper with a B850 or B650 board

If it is cheaper grab an sn770 for storage

Budget (including currency): 2'500 CHF (Swiss francs)

Country: Switzerland

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for:

Mostly games like:

  • World of war craft
  • Diablo 4
  • The Witcher 3
  • Sid Meier's Civilization VII

Usual web browsing, text editing, etc...

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

Parts worth keeping (IMHO):

  • The case (wished by the friend)
  • The 24" screen (1920x1080 but with a 144Hz refresh rate)
  • Keyboard (Logitech G815) and mouse (G500s) should be fine
  • DVD drive (yes still in use)

Parts not worth keeping (IMHO):

  • Hard drive (yes still a disk) of 500 Gb
  • GTX 970
  • CPU and motherboard of the i5 5th gen. era

When would I buy: as soon as I can get a hand on a GPU at something around MSRP...

Here is what I was thinking:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D or AMD Ryzen 5 7600X3D (found respectively at around 435 CHF and 320 CHF)
  • CPU cooler: Noctua Nh-D15 (found around 95 CHF)
  • Motherboard: MSI X670E GAMING PLUS WIFI (found around 220 CHF)
  • RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws S5 2x16 GB kit (found around 110 CHF) - speed: 6000 Hz CL: CL30-40-40-96
  • SSD: Crucial T500 2 TB (found around 170 CHF)
  • HD: Seagate IronWolf 8 TB for large storage space (found around 190 CHF)
  • Graphic card: XFX VGA 16GB RADEON RX9070XT SWIFT OC Gaming (found around 870 CHF, when available...)
  • Case fans: Noctua 120mm (3 units at 30 CHF each)
  • PSU: Seasonic Vertex PX-1000 (found around 225 CHF)

Which gives me a total of around 2405 CHF giving me a little wiggle room in case prices go up or to buy a case if something were not to fit (or the current case were to be to restrictive on air).

Does this seem balanced or am I going overkill on one or the other elements and could save some money for something else?

Also avoiding Nvidia GPU as they're very difficult to get a hold of, way more expensive and not way better from my understanding on a performance/price stand point.

what is the speed and cl of the ram, Keep the 500gb drive.

Thanks for you quick feedback @Millios!

So:

  • PSU would go for the Seasonic Vertex PX-850 instead (30 CHF economy)
  • HDD is to store pictures and videos (my friend has a child...)
  • Motherboard: B850 doesn't have a PCIe 5.0 isn't that a problem for the GPU (based on https://www.techspot.com/guides/2901-amd-ryzen-x870-b850-b840-x670-b650-a620-motherboards/)? Maybe something like the Gigabyte B850 Gaming X WIFI6E (190 CHF) or the MSI PRO B850-P WIFI (around 185 CHF)
  • SSD: the SN770 would be a little cheaper at around 115 CHF

As for the Noctua fans, yes they're expensive but it's also a question of having a quiet computer 😉

Eventually thinking of transforming the old hardware in a NAS for backup... today my friend only uses an external drive

This is a decent list but you are overpaying for a few components here.

The 7800X3D can easily be cooled by a Peerless Assassin SE120 or a Phantom Spirit, NH-D15 works wonders but its just too expensive to recommend.

I know that here in Norway the Seasonic Vertex PX lineup is very very expensive. Can you check the price for a Corsair RM850x 2024 / ATX 3.1 model?

750w-850w is plenty for this setup.

I quite the opposite

The B850 does have PCIe 5.0 and the GPUs are forwards and backwards compatible so that isn't an issue

If they have a kid and it is for pics and vids then ok that is understandable and a good use of an HDD

Since it is cheaper grab it

It is one of the top performers in the nvme space

There are other quite fans but to each their own I guess

PSU go for the 850w and save the cash imo

The Corsair would be 50 CHF cheaper, but I've personally had to RMA two PSU from them so I'm not sure I want to trust them for a friends build 😓

As for CPU cooler I'll see what I can find which would be cheaper while staying super silent 👍

For the same price as the Phantom Spirit I can get a Noctua NH-U12S, which would be best?

Thats unfortunate.  Were they RMx PSU's or a different lineup?

In PSU's we usually go by the lineup and not by brand.  I personally only use Corsair RMx.

But its up to you, the Vertex PX is a good series of PSU's.  Maybe pick the GX lineup as they are a bit cheaper ( Vertex GX )

The GX will also come with 12 year warranty like the PX.

The Peerless Assassin SE120 will be super silent and be plenty enough 🙂

I cool my overclocked 9800X3D with a AK620 at a constant 30% fan speed. These CPU's only draw 80-110w during heavy gaming.

Very easy to cool 🙂

Maybe you can find a DeepCool AK620 where you live, I love mine.  Can't hear it at all.

Expensive doesn't mean overpriced. Noctua is best in class and their support is unmatched. 10 years down the road, if you need new mounting hardware, they'll just send you some. I'd rather spend a little more for peace of mind. You do you, of course, but by the same token, if the OP wants to go Noctua, there's nothing wrong with that.

Did I say overpriced?  I infact did not

I said "pricey" ie as you said expensive

Do I agree noctua is excellent in terms of quality? yes

But its cost is to be noted as well

As I phrased it, its smt I personally would do and not smt everyone oughta do
