Hi everyone.

A few weeks ago, I built a gaming PC, and since the very first boot, I've been experiencing an issue that is driving me crazy, and I haven't been able to find a solution. Based on my research online and AI assistance, it seems to be related to a cold boot issue.

The problem occurs every time I power on the PC after it has been turned off for an extended period (e.g., overnight). When I press the power button, the system turns on—fans, LEDs, mouse keyboard and the AIO cooler all function—but the screen stays completely black. The monitor, which is connected via a DisplayPort cable, receives power (its backlight turns on), but nothing is displayed. The only way to get it working is to press the reset button on the case. After that, the PC reboots and functions normally without any issues.

After I restart the PC and it boots successfully, it continues to work fine for the rest of the day, even if I turn it off for 30 minutes or an hour. The issue only happens after the system has been powered off for an extended period.

Additionally, during the first boot failure (when the screen remains black with no cursor or any output), the motherboard’s debug LED for VRAM stays lit. This LED is located in the bottom left corner of the motherboard.

My system specs:

  • Motherboard: Gigabyte B650 Eagle AX
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
  • RAMCORSAIR VENGEANCE DDR5 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 6000MHz CL30
  • GPU: 5070 ti ( also same problem with my old 3060 ti )
  • PSUCORSAIR RM850e
  • CASEPhanteks XT Pro Ultra
  • COOLINGThermalright AQUA ELITE 360 V3

Troubleshooting steps I have already tried (unsuccessfully):

  • I am using the EXPO profile to run the RAM at its rated speed, but I am fairly certain this is not a RAM issue because I have already tested with a different memory stick and also tried disabling EXPO, with no success.
  • I have tried enabling and disabling Memory Context Restore in the BIOS.
  • I have double-checked all power connections to ensure they are properly seated.
  • I increased the RAM voltage slightly, as suggested by AI assistance, but it didn’t help.
  • I updated the BIOS to the latest version.
  • I updated all drivers and installed the latest Windows 10 updates.
  • I reset the CMOS by removing the battery, but the issue persisted.

One last thing I am unsure about: when the PC boots normally (after a restart), it initially turns on, then briefly shuts off, and then powers back on again before booting into Windows. Is this behavior normal for this motherboard?

Sorry if this post is pretty much a mess but i tried so many things in the past week that i don't even remember all of them. I'm starting to feel sad and defeated, any help would be greatly appreciated!

if your motherboard is under warranty try to get a replacement.

I just got a MSI 5070 SHADOW 2X OC and I have similar issue.. but my screen turns on when window shows welcome screen. I am not able to see post screen or windows loading screen on cold boot.

After I reboot I can see my post screen and I am able to access bios if I want to, something that I am not able to do on cold boot.

I figured that the issue is related to display port.

I've tried doing cold boot with only one HDMI cable connected to my 5070 and I can see post screen.

If I use HDMI and Displayport at the same time (one to my tv and the other to my pc) I wont be seeing anything till windows welcome screen.

what did you end up doing?

I have new PC and this are my specs

Main Board: MSI x670e Gaming Plus WIFI

Bios Version: 7E16v1A4(Beta version)

GPU: MSI RTX 5070 Shadow 2X OC

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9800x3D

Memory: G.Skill Flare X5 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR5 6000

Operating System: Windows 11 (24H2)

Display: Acer Nitro 23.8 IPS (XF243Y) (DisplayPort Connected)

  • 5 weeks later...

I was having the same issue where I would see a black screen (PC posts but I couldnt see it) and would only display after I got into windows.

Seems like the issue was fixed after installing the GPU firmware update:

Geforce GTX 700 Series - 10 Series: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/nv-uefi-update-x64/
Geforce RTX 30 Series: https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5233/~/nvidia-gpu-firmware-update-tool-for-displayid
Geforce RTX 4080 / 4090: https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5411/~/nvidia-gpu-uefi-firmware-update-tool

Hope that helps
