By clicking the "Add to Library"  button, I agree to receive marketing communications from GOG and CD PROJEKT on my email address and through GOG services and GOG's Trusted Partners' services, to get Amerzone: The Explorer's Legacy (1999)

so.. they "give away" a 26 year old game "for free" to harvest a bunch of email addresses for themselves and their "trusted partners" so they can flood your inbox with garbage.

remember when GOG was a place to find classics? now it's just a platform feasting off classic games to sell your data.

for those interested, the "add to account" button on steam doesnt have strings atached:

also, the notion that a point&click game from 1999 is worth 13 bucks today is absolutely hilareous. this game was mediocre when it came out (i actually have a disk version of this somewhere), it was probably close to 13 bucks sticker price then, it sure as hell isnt worth that now.

I don't really see what the problem is. To claim a GOG game you need an account... in which they're gonna have you email already. This is just asking if you want more emails for other free giveaways.

I mean Steam

Does the exact same thing. When you add a game to your wishlist you agree that you'll get marketed ads telling you said wishlist item's gone on sale.

the problem is they specificly call out you give permission to share it with partners for marketing purposes, IF you click the add to library button.

the account thing is a thing on both sides. but this would kind of be like you have your e-mail preferences all disabled, you add a free game to your library, and you suddenly start to get e-mails about new games on the steam store.

they also dont "ask", you essentially 'buy' an absolutely shit game, in trade for a bunch of marketing mails flooding your inbox.

if it were a game worth getting, i'd say "it's a trade you need to think about", but this IMO is a cheap attempt at just making people click "i agree" to a bunch of marketing mails.

it's not the same though.. all e-mails i get from steam are as configured in my account, if i dont want to get e-mails about stuff on my wishlist going on sale, i turn that option off, and no amount of stirring around in the store will change that.

The only emails I receive from GOG in my inbox are receipts when I claim a free game. This is very useful for knowing exact dates I claimed GOG freebies. You can turn off all other emails from GOG by hovering over your account avatar at the top of the GOG website and clicking on Orders & Settings then click on Subscriptions. You'll then see this, simply uncheck all...

$12.99 is just its retail price, it dropped to $0.99 when on sale in less than a half a year of being on Steam and GOG and has sat at that $0.99 ever since. Before recent inflation it would hit a constant fifty cents from Summer of 2020 to Summer of 2023.

Retail prices for games are not its actual value, its actual value is the sale price it commonly hits throughout time.
