Ok I finally defeated windows dumb login screen timer (I think) but...?

I did this

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI
DWORD Value: IdleTimeOut
Unit: msec

(set it to 900 seconds)

It works 20250319_220536927.thumb.JPG.fd15a58684eceb8865ddb83ed50eec12.JPG

But only after sleep, idle etc, not on the login screen on boot...which really isn't a huge issue but now I'm curious why that doesn't work, is there an extra policy/regedit just for windows login screen after boot?

Can anyone else confirm it works for you?

... what are you trying to achieve exactly?

If you log into windows, the log in screen is set to randomly go dark (aka turn off your screen) after 30 seconds to 2 minutes at random... Especially the randomness annoys me "bro, can I get a bit of coffee before typing my password...?" Kinda deal, but also I just like having this in the background sometimes... It's just a chill ~15 watts clock! 😅

(That's why I set it 900 seconds, 15 minutes is enough for whatever I'm doing and it not turning off the screen, usually)

But. After cold boot... It doesn't seem to work... It's still just ~30 seconds, I'm wondering if it's some Asus software messing with it or if that's just how it is on windows (11), because I mean, it's literally in the login section, it 'should' work for the windows login screen even after boot/reboot...?

in all 6 years of IT i've never had anyone come to me and complain that the login screen goes to screensaver too fast...

anyways, if behavior is different between sleep and cold boot, it's likely because after sleep you're still signed in so your user profile settings are applied, and after cold boot the system defaults are applied. so it's something you've set under your profile, that should also be set as a system default.

this is the same mechanism that causes people who use non-default keyboard layout + language combo's to see once removed keyboard layouts repeatedly return.

I asked the phat llama

The registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI can contain both IdleTime and IdleTimeOut values, but they serve different purposes:

  • IdleTime: This value may represent the time you were idle during the previous logon session. It changes dynamically after each login.

  • IdleTimeOut: This value is used to control the timeout duration for the login screen inactivity. It is typically measured in milliseconds and determines how long the login screen remains active before timing out.

So there's two values. IdleTime period changed dynamically, whereas it's been stated that IdleTimeOut value is in milliseconds.

So I *did* change the right thing. It's just weird it didn't work after I rebooted, only after I put the laptop to sleep?

Maybe it's like @manikyath suggests and it's somehow user profile specific...which doesn't really make sense for the login screen though, and because it's a registry entry but then not everything makes sense (in windows). But idk maybe it's a bug or a conflict with another setting... There's a gazillion Asus power, energy saver, boot screen, what have you apps installed on this thing.

Oh yeah and I read it's in milliseconds, but that seems wrong because I set it to 900 and it's been "idle" for over 10 minutes before I logged on ...

I have several VMs with Windows. I can confirm the value for IdleTime value is indeed dynamic upon each reboot

Heh, I wanna know "what" idle time, is it just the time it takes to login (type your password) or? And how's that important enough to have a registry entry!? 😅

Yeah, I don't get either why my desktop PC has need to turn off the monitor after I turn it on and it's sitting at the password screen.

Can I be your #2? Because I don't like it either.
