Hello! I’m currently in the market for a laptop for starting my new job and im not sure what to go for and id appreciate any suggestions or guidance on what to go for.

Im not really looking to play games on it so gpu isn’t important i am mostly going to be using it for writing reports, watching videos and running company software for reading DTCs and using PicoTech (mechanic stuff). Let me know if I can provide any further information that would be helpful. 🙂

why is your job not buying you a laptop

We get a fixed amount to buy equipment which includes tools etc and it’s just not enough to cover everything so im having to fork out some of my own money for things such as a laptop.

they do have 3 laptops available however when you try to share them amongst all the techs it’s just not worth the wait

what model laptops do they provide?
does the equipment require any special connectors, like ethernet or serial?
I like the build quality of newer thinkpad L14 models and they are dirt cheap used.
you could also for the budget get an older used Dell Latitude Rugged 14.
for new, thats not gonna be a lot of budget for something that is more fitting for your usecase if I assume you will be hauling the laptop into vehicles and back out and using it on a workbench and stuff. It should have some decent impact resistance.
