FYI: If anyone for whatever reason wants to replicate this build, get another ssd or motherboard. Apparently there is a known issue with samsung and wd drives in the first m2 slot. It only intermittently detects the drive in that slot. Other brands could be affected. Took me a week to troubleshoot and find back complaints going almost a year back, MSI doesn't seem to care...

Budget (Not really a concern. Aim to be somewhere under
2000):

Country: Belgium (home of fries/chocolate/beer/cycling and Larian studios)

Games, workloads that it will be used for:

It will mainly be used for gaming and remote work. But as a sysadmin, I only need a terminal/tunnel to my employer's laptop/servers.

Monitor/resolution: I game on 1440 180Hz, I have a second 1440 monitor that usually displays a YouTube video, and a third vertical 1080 to display Discord/Spotify/something for reference/...

Peripherals: I already have plenty of those, some might say too many.

OS: I would love to use Linux, but anti-cheats keep dragging me back to Windows. I tried dual boot, it's way too annoying to switch every time.

Parts excluded from the budget: I will reuse my RTX 4070 since I bought it a year and a half ago. I might upgrade if the 6000 series is compelling. Or maybe even an AMD in a couple of years.

Extra restrictions: My current setup is mounted under the Secretlab MAGNUS pro xl. So this means the following height and weight restrictions, weight is very unlikely to be a problem:

  • Height: 354 - 543 mm (14,0 - 21,5")
  • Width: 170 - 300 mm (6,7 - 11,8")
  • Weight: up to 25kg (55lb)

Goal: It's getting time to replace my aging 9600K. I want it to be quiet, both in sound and appearance, so I want as little RGB as possible. I love the wooden accent on the case in this build, and I also love that it does not have a side window.

Needed feedback:

- motherboard: feedback/advice would be welcome. All the minor differences between platforms and even the same platform make it difficult to narrow it down.

- CPU cooler: The Be quiet Dark Rock Elite looked promising at first glance, but then I heard there is no offset mounting, and that performance with AM5 is not that great for the price. I would love quiet suggestions (sound and visual). Preferably air, black and no RGB or at least the ability to turn it off.
- fans: Not sure if I need extra. Or if the included fans are enough and not too loud.

for your cooler I would with the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE. It comes in black and is cheaper than the be quiet.

You can save about 20€ if the 4TB storage is just for games and stuff and nothing else that would require too fast speeds, other than loading those games.

Here's almost everything that could be cheaper: (4TB SSD is same)

You want a 120mm exhaust fan for the back of that case and a board with a sufficient amount of PCIe lanes when running dual M.2 SSD's. Ignore the bios warning in the link, this board allows you to update the bios without having to first install the cpu and RAM if by the very slim chance this board doesn't include the bios for that cpu.

Looks like a great motherboard. It even has a preinstalled ioshield. So I don't have to put my PC together twice because I forgot it again.

And good job spotting that the case only comes with two intake fans. Will definitely look for an extra fan.

Doesn't B650 have 36, if GPU has 16 that's still 20 extra for everything else.

The X670E chipset gives the OP PCIe 5.0 which is a plus for any future gpu / SSD upgrades.

5.0 PCIe SSD is excessively expensive and unnecessary though

The PCIe 5.0 is more for the gpu upgrade seeing how all these new gpu's support PCIe 5.0

PCIe 5.0 doesn't give the GPU any advantage, seen by 5090 losing on average 1-4fps going 4.0 even at 1080p
