Was I shipped a bad SSD or am I just useless at installing it?

I've tried installing an M.2 NVME SSD into my computer in both available M.2 slots and neither are recognising it. It doesn't show up in disk management as an unallocated drive and doesn't show up in device manager. I also checked the UEFI and neither slot would recognise that something had been installed. My motherboard is an Asrock Z270 Gaming K6 and the drive is a Crucial P3 1TB PCIe 3.0 NVMe M.2 2280 SSD. Is there a compatibility issue I hadn't foreseen here?

 

The installation of the drive felt smooth in both slots. It was easy to find the right angle and there was no particular resistance when lowering it down onto the board to screw in. While the motherboard is almost 8 years old, neither of these slots have been used before today. I've attached photos if it helps.

 

I'd be really surprised if my first M.2 SSD ended up being faulty, but I just can't figure out what the problem is.

Are you using SATA ports?

everything you are doing is correct, and it should just work, and be compatible with itself, but it doesn't... 

on 78 page of manual, there is this... 

M2_1/ SATA3_0_1 Switch

Auto: M2_1/SATA3_0_1 auto switch

Force_SATA: Switch to SATA3_0_1

Force_M2_1: Switch to M2_1

 

M2_2/ SATA3_4_5 Switch

Auto: M2_2/SATA3_4_5 auto switch

Force_SATA: Switch to SATA3_4_5

Force_M2_2: Switch to M2_2

You can force it to use M.2 instead of SATA, it's worth to try, even tho you are not using them, to force M.2 on it. 
If that won't help, try to restore to defaults for UEFI 

And if that don't work, update the uefi, if there's is any new uefi available for you.

 

thar is also something strange in the manual about the three full PCIE x16 slot PCIE2/PCIE4/PCIE6


"3 x PCI Express 3.0 x16 Slots (PCIE2/PCIE4/PCIE6: single at x16 (PCIE2); dual at x8 (PCIE2) / x8 (PCIE4); triple at x8 (PCIE2) / x8 (PCIE4) / x4 (PCIE6))* "

As it should be x8/x4/x4 with triple, if they are all from CPU, this may indicate, there's a switch from one of the M.2 slot, to the PCIE6 slot.
But that also is strange, and if that's the case, PCIE6 should have been always "x4", and not "N/A" with single, or two GPU...

Just to be sure, what PCIE slot you are using right now?

Thanks everyone for the replies. I was able to confirm that the fault was not with the SSD, as that is now working fine in an NVME to USB enclosure. I've tried everything mentioned above, short of updating my UEFI, but I don't think I'll go that far. I'll just upgrade my machine in a few month's time, it's had a long run.

You can just buy pcie to m.2 adapter for 4-5$, the cpu pcie x16 slots should always work, as it's bypassing all of chipset/mobo.
