Hi ya'll, Sorry if there is an active thread regarding this topic. I am curious about a PC refresh and thinking about maybe putting in an AMD card in my PC, like the 9070 XT if it performs well. Though I have this issue where I really like to play and crank those Arkham games to the max at times and I love their PhysX/GameWorks implementations. Is it a hassle to run PhysX through a hybrid solution nowadays, like if I put in a 3050 Low Profile card (as some 5090 users did) with an AMD GPU as a main card? Found old posts on the net talking about dummy plugs and driver issues. Has anyone actually tried running this in later years and bonus question, does it work with Arkham Knight?

Again, sorry if there is a better active thread about hybrid PhysX.

Nvidia + Nvidia works because drivers support it. AMD + Nvidia is kind of pointless, if you want Physx get a supported card. I havent heard anyone mention that setup ever since AMD cards were still called ATI.

Afaik Arkham Knight is unaffected by the 5000 series dropping support, because it is 64-bit, but obviously if you buy AMD that doesn't help you here.

That's why I'm wondering if the hybrid solution even works in 2025, I don't find much talking about it past 2020.

There were some recent(last half year) videos of some I think chinese people who ran amd and nvidia gpus in the same pc. They just ran both gpu drivers side by side and from what I could tell it worked but was a crashing nightmare. Their focus was to use dlss with an amd gpu and that worked good for fps but I hope you aren't afraid of any BSOD.

edit: In windows I think they set some settings to pass thru the programs/games that the raw power was the amd card and software came from the nvidia card. Not sure but remembered something along those ways.

Thank you, gonna try to investigate it further on my own. I mostly want the PhysX stuff and it is a Control Panel setting to set a designated card for it but it's the AMD as a main card issue making it a bit of a problem.

  • 1 month later...

I just setup my 9070 XT / GT 1030 Low Profile rig.  I can confirm that Nvidia PhysX does indeed work in my hybrid system.  I was anxious to purchase AMD because I play a lot of older games with PhysX.  Infact, this is my first AMD card.  The last purchase was when they were still named ATI. I remember Neverwinter Nights was just released and Nvidia cards had shiny water that did not work with ATI cards.  I have been Team Green ever since.

If anyone is wondering, my setup is RX 9070 XT to my Display, HDMI port from my GT 1030 to my Yamaha receiver for audio, and another HDMI cable from my Yamaha to my display to complete the HDCP link.  HDMI input 1 on my TV is my main display from the 9070 XT and HDMI input 2 is the return signal from my Yamaha.  This way the Nvidia card 'thinks' it's active.  In the Nvidia control panel choose GT 1030 as the PhysX processor.

If you don't have a similar setup, another option is to purchase a HDMI dummy plug to insert into the Nvidia card.  You will have to do research on that yourself since I don't do that method.

I ran the Batman Arkham City in game benchmark tool with the settings at 4K max and PhysX set to high.  My FPS results are: Min 64, Max 117, Avg 94.

I hope this post helps.

Cheers!
