Valve updates the Source 1 engine SDK with all of the Team Fortress 2 source code

Summary

Earlier today Valve updated their GitHub repository of the Source 1 engine to include all of the Team Fortress 2 client and server code. This effectively makes all of Team Fortress 2 open source, as well as allows officially supported mods or games based on Team Fortress 2 code. They also included some Source 1 engine improvements for old games that still run it. While the source code has been available from leaked sources for a while, this makes it official and allows for games or mods to be released through Steam. The code already had the Half-Life 2 source code and was last updated in 2014.

Mod makers, rejoice! We've just released a massive update to the Source SDK, adding all the Team Fortress 2 client and server game code. This update will allow content creators to build completely new games based on TF2.

The SDK is licensed to users on a non-commercial basis, meaning that any mod created using the SDK must be free, and any content in those mods must be free.

My thoughts

This is how you 'kill' games. TF2 still has about 50k concurrent players and is still obviously making money, but it's pretty clear that Valve is done with it. The final comic released a few weeks ago and IMO seemed like send off to the game.

Not really, you're still only allowed to use it in specific approved ways. It's more "source available" than open source.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

TF2 will never really "die" as long as there are community servers like Uncletopia.

Matchmaking and Valve servers only came about years after the game was released.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

So people will be able to use it as a base to make their entirely new game. Cool. More team based shooting games. Exactly what we needed.
