I am thinking of upgrading my motherboard/CPU/RAM to a Gigabyte X870E AORUS ELITE WIFI7 and Ryzen 9900X, but I'm wondering which RAM I should best take with that.

Currently I'm looking at Kingston FURY Renegade DDR5 CUDIMM 8400MT/s CL40 48GB (2 x 24GB) vs Patriot Memory Viper Venom 2x32GB 6400Mhz CL32 and I wonder which one is better.

I know a lower CL value is preferred, but would the extra RAM speed more than make up for it or not? Or should I look at something else in between? (other recommendations are always welcome)

Getting anything above 6000Mhz to be stable on Ryzen 7000/9000 is very hit and miss and we always recommend 6000Mhz CL30 for this reason.

The performance gain of 8400Mhz is not really worth it, if you can get it to work at all.

You can check the differences here. I timed it.

Anything faster than 6000/C30 is pretty much pointless unless it is cheap.

The problem is that you have to change the divider for anything over 6200/6400 (depends on the CPU/motherboard) and the memory has to be very fast to make up for that. If the cost is a lot higher than a cheap 6000-6400 kit, it just doesn't make sense.

Hmm, so it's also better for me to look for a 6000MT 30CL kit instead of the beforementioned Patriot Memory Viper Venom 2x32GB 6400Mhz CL32? Or at least that's what I seem to understand from having a quick glance at the techpowerup article (cannot watch the video // read it in more detail until the evening).

The reason I'm looking at the patriot kit is because it's one of the cheaper options (for 64 gb RAM) at the place I'm looking to buy it.

Edit: nvm, seems like the patriot 2x32 GB 6400MT CL32 is the exact same price as the 2x32 GB 6000MT CL30.

Baseline aim for RAM at 6000MHz speed. When it comes to timings, aim for the lowest, but realistically get the cheapest one that's CL36 at most. If it's lower than CL36 and still one of the cheapest, consider it a bonus and 1-2 fps increase in games. In productivity no different at all. Not worth investment.

e.g. if one two RAM sticks are 6000MHz but one is CL36 at $70 and the other one is CL30 at $85, not worth it, just get the $70 one, not worth $15 difference. If the same price, get the lowest one.

2x16GB

2x24GB

2x32GB

2x48GB

6000CL30 to 36 (not going to make a meaningful difference unless you're an enthusiast RAM tweaker)

Nothing faster and no more than 2x DIMM's if you want the system to boot correctly and work as expected with little to no adjustment.

Slight correction, CL30 to CL36-36-36, not CL36-44-44 as is becoming more common as that stuff performs more like the older 6000 CL40 kits while also having some compatibility issues.

Compare apples to apples. Decide how much RAM you need first.

If your applications require 64GB, then 64GB of slow RAM will be better than 48GB fast RAM.

And the 6000/CL30 is the sweetspot. Like the article above explains. The extreme fast RAM may not be stable with all MB and CPU...
