Hi all,

I am planning out my NAS build and am almost locked into a cpu, the intel i3 12100.

In my area the second hand market offers plenty of 12100f but while I would not use the NAS as my media server (I have a dedicated server for that), I was just curious to see if it would be able to do things like run Jellyfin without the igpu?

Or does it just means that there won't be any video output when I plug in a screen in the NAS?

correct, without an iGPU, there will be no way to display, unless you add a GPU.

Well, Jellyfin isn't an OS, so, you'd have to pick an OS that will let you run it and remote manage it without any display out.

Assuming you can fully remotely configure jellyfin, it'd work fine.

The only thing a GPU helps with is re-encoding video. (For example if you're connected to it remotely, you could watch a lower resolution stream of your content to save bandwidth.) The CPU can do that by itself, it's just far less efficient at it.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

True that however jellyfin does offer option to play with external player which encodes client side instead server side which mine does on andriod so it should work but limited because browser/pc doesn't have option as far I've checked.

I'm jank tinkerer if it works then it works.

Regardless of compatibility 🐧🖖

You could also get a cheap GPU with Decoding and Encoding capabilities like the Geforce GTX 750 Ti LP (LP for low profile if you dont have a lot of space) and they can go for around $80 new or maybe $60 used or less depends and they dont draw a lot of power and if you dont spare power dont worry it takes around 60W from the Motherboard

Update, jellyfin was vague on their official website telling me there's only github and flathub but apparently on github there's client package and does offer option to transcode on client side which i just did and it's working as intended.

I have no idea what Jellyfin is but for encoding and decoding video, the Quadro T400 and similar cards work well and are much newer. It seems the prices have gone up since they were released 2 years ago though

Ya I sould not buy such an expensive card juts for encoding (unless you want power efficientcy)  the GTX 750 is 2x the power draw but only at full load you would be using like less than 30w just for encoding and decoding - jellyfin is like plex a streaming and lets you host movies on your own devices - I have one setup for my parents to watch there movies and my little sisters on my main pc and it takes up so little power from my GTX1650 GDDR6 - im still able to play games as if it was using OBS to record some games so its like around 5~10 fps drops  and most of my games are running 60+ fps

Also make sure your motherboard is able to POST without a graphics card. It still is somewhat of a hit and miss with intel systems.
