OMFG... I just ran into this mandatory shader compiling bs with Monster Hunter Wilds. Took an hour to do that just to end up with a microstuttering game anyway. So what was the compiling for anyway? I see absolutely no benefit.

Would like to give it a pass due to its open beta status, but this is happening just about every single time when I start playing with my friends. So instead, I am just playing Shader Compile Simulator.

The difference between power modes and power plans is that on compatible hardware the power mode can also interact with the system at a hardware level and control things like CPU and fan speed.

This is actually a major headache in the enterprise sector as many models of Lenovo and Dell laptops will not use the system fan in balanced power mode, they will instead use clock speed to regulate thermals.  As a result even in balanced power mode users in a warm office could see their performance tank as their CPU dropped to Pentium III speeds (in MHz not performance per cycle), they would then of course log calls with IT for it.

What made this even more ridiculous until recently is that prior to 2024 there was no way to configure this setting from a terminal which means it could not be scripted via command/PowerShell/etc to change from default and so every single laptop imaged needed to be logged into and set to best performance before handing it to a user /vomit.

WHAT GRINDS MY GEARS IS THAT WINDOWS IS A DUMB DICK OPERATING SYSTEM THAT IS TOO HEAVY FOR NO GODDAMN REASON.

Windows wastes so much CPU and RAM on telemetry and whatever stupid fucking bullshit Microsoft chooses to cram in there and it all just makes the experience worse on hardware that is "older" but still not "old" and that should still be just fine for most people if the operating system were actually designed to be resource-efficient.

Like, my 2c/4t laptop from 2013 with 8 gigs of RAM and an SSD is slow and chuggy in Windows 10 just to load basic programs (and won't even load Windows 11 lol) but it's perfectly snappy and quick in Linux Mint XFCE. Now, this would be fine if Windows actually used that extra hardware requirements to add in features that make it more functional than Mint XFCE but it fucking doesn't (unless you consider copilot a "feature" LMAO, but hell, I can still access LLMs on Linux if I want to!) Windows is just arbitrarily heavier for no reason that's actually helpful to the end user (though I suppose all that telemetry is great for Microsoft!)

These days I'd honestly recommend a ChromeOS machine for most people over Windows. Yeah, ChromeOS has its own issues but at the very least it's not a bloated piece of shit.

Not since I last updated Word on my desktop. For a bit it happened with my laptop. I started having issues with that when Word integrated Copilot.

Have you tried running a repair of office? Something is clearly not right.

ran into a issue with a high end hp laptop. that went crazy with win 11  system fan in power plan.

never could fix it and re install 10 pro.

but i never seen a fan config refusing to change.

Things I want the Start Menu to do:

  • Search the files on my local computer
  • Show me the applications I have installed
  • Let me use the search box as the Run window

Things I do not want the Start Menu to do:

  • Search the web
  • Suggest applications I could install
  • "Suggest" anything
  • Show me the weather wherever my public IP resolves
  • Show me tabloid headlines
  • Strike up a conversation with a hallucinating LLM

I wholeheartedly agree with Alex re: AI.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

Unfortunately if you did that, then users would throw their laptop into their bag and it would not power down, causing much shortened battery life and thermal damage.

Alex mentioning about the co-pilot key replacing where the right Ctrl key used to be, my laptop is setup like that too. But I have seen the one model out there, that still both Ctrl keys along with Co-Pilot. The Co-Pilot is located on the function row.

Did I miss something in the macOS section or did Jake completely ignore the fact that you can just go into System Settings ➡ Desktop & Dock and disable the "Tiled windows have margins"-option to get rid of the spacing between windows? Come on guys, at least do basic research before you complain! 🙃 Or in your own words: do you even try this stuff before you release these?
