So my laptop (2024 XPS 15 9530) is randomly shutting down in my bag. Usually I grab it off my desk, unplug it from the dock, slip it in my bag, and take it to class. Most days it is shut down when I get it to class despite me just putting it to sleep the night before. Similar issue coming back from class. I will put it out of my bag after a day of use and it will be shut down to, starting up and stating its loading dell safe bios (or whatever it says, its the same message when I actually turn it on from a real and intended shut down).

I have verified all of my drivers are up to date, the bios is up to date, and windows is on the lastest full release.

In event viewer I seem to get one of the following errors based on whether or not it is coming off the dock thats hooked to ethernet or from my bag where it has wifi.

Miniport Intel(R) Ethernet Controller (3) I225-LMvP, {124c5aaa-a9e7-49b9-aa3e-91c03ffd1360}, had event Fatal error: The miniport has failed a power transition to operational power

Miniport Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter #4, {e03e671f-193f-40e5-ad95-8c1444e54d90}, had event Fatal error: The miniport has failed a power transition to operational power

There then tends to be a kernel boot within a second or two at most.

My thought is something with windows modern standby based on it seems to exit and then re-enter modern standby between when I close it and when I open to find it shut down (based on event viewer. Anyone got any thoughts?

and this is why I never use sleep mode 🙂 if you are putting it to sleep because you need to save your work, use hibernate. You don't have to worry about constantly charging it overnight because its not using any power, and when you turn it on, all your stuff is still there.

otherwise just shut it down

If you really need sleep mode for some reason, perhaps for just shutting it to transport it somewhere else for a couple minutes then

Any dump files? Check C:\Windows\Minidump in file explorer

I edit my messages more than not –

Probably some dude on the internet

Windows modern standby doesn’t always work to put a laptop to sleep. What is probably happening is that your laptop is overheating while in your bag and or is just running and kills your battery.
