Getting a used 5800X3D + B450 motherboard, and need to see if it POSTs before I finalize the deal. It's feasible to just run it without cooler to see if it POSTs, right? It shouldn't heat up to 100°C immediately?

Yes you can. I did it with a 7600 a few days ago and it was fine for about half a minute until I turned it off. It didn't even heat up much

This is one of those times where I have to say, "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should".

Any fan is better than no fan.  Have you considered using something such as a desktop fan pointed in the case?  Anything to just get the hot air from collecting inside the case.  Yea, we all know that hot air rises but better safe than sorry.

Take care and good luck.

Thanks for the input, but I was planning on doing out outside of the case anyway (on a surface that's properly grounded in order to not cause any shorts on the mobo). And it's really for 1-2 minutes max - I need to get to POST, no OS booting or anything.

Worst case scenario, anything to keep heat off the chip works.

I've seen someone keep metal cube with one face coated in old laptop thermal pads to mak for such a "test" cooler. As he reasoned, "if it's for a few seconds, doesn't need to be clean nor make proper contact, and better than rawdogging the CPU".

I've gotten to know some stuff, but am far from omniscient, so don't take my advice as gospel and wait for other opinions - I just like throwing in my two cents when I can.
