Hi yall. I recently moved into an apartment, and want to set up my computer in my room. There are two ethernet wall mounts in the apartment, shown in the pictures, and I would like to use those to connect my desktop to the internet. The Verizon worker set up the modem with the coaxial cable in the living room, seen in the picture. I also found the utility panel in the closet, shown below. I am not sure if the ethernet ports in the walls are hooked up, nor do I know how to check using my existing modem+router set up. I was wondering if I could set this up myself without having to wait a week for the maintenance guys to come set it up, so any help or guidance would be appreciated. Feel free to ask any clarifying questions - I will do my best to answer with my limited networking knowledge.

Do you rent or own?
If you rent, don't touch it. If you screw something up, you're going to be left with a hefty bill to fix it.

Also, why not just plug in the PC to the Ethernet ports in the wall and see if you get a connection?

I own the modem and router. I have plugged my computer into all four ports and have gotten nothing.

You need to connect the ports where the wires terminate (the black patch panel) to something (a switch) and then plug the router into any port and all the other ports will get connectivity.

So i need to plug an ethernet cable from the router into any one of the ports on the black panel labeled 1-8?

Then leave anything within the walls or boxes to the maintenance staff.

No, you plug all 8 ports into the patch panel ports and then plug the router into one of the wall ports

or

You can plug the router into the switch and then connect the switch to the other remaining patch ports.

Edit:

Looks like only 6 ports are wired up so an 8 port switch would be perfect
