I am looking for an EGPU compatible with USB-A, as my laptop does not have a USB-C port.

Current system specs:

  • DELL Inspiron 15 3520
  • Windows 11 Home
  • Intel Core i5-1235U
  • Iris Xe Graphics
  • 16 GB RAM
  • 512 GB SSD

I need a minimum of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 (6GB), AMD Radeon RX 580 (8GB), Intel ARC A580 (8GB)

These are an absolute minimum, I would prefer newer, able to do 1080p gaming and video editing.

Main "Rig"=HP 11A G6 EE

Android Tablet

Raspberry PI Zero W 2

If you have any fun ideas for things for me to do with my PI, send me a direct message.

I plan to upgrade within a few months to a proper computer.

eGPUs generally run off thunderbolt, which is a special protocol that's additional to a type-c USB port. For your device, the only reasonable way would be to use an M.2 slot adapted to occulink or PCIe. That's hoping the device has a spare M.2 slot, which it likely doesn't.

Build a desktop if you need more GPU power or get another device with an actual Thunderbolt/USB4 port.

not possible. eGPU isnt a USB thing, it's a PCIe over thunderbolt thing.

I am fine with plugging in a monitor into the GPU, I don't know what that is called

I don't have the budget or space for a desktop, but I have access to a monitor.

even if we ignore the fact your laptop has no way (even trough misusing an internal slot) to connect to an external GPU..

- external gpu docks arent small, they still need to hold a power supply and GPU, just like a desktop pc.

- external gpu docks arent cheap.

All I want to know is if it is possible and if it is, a good EGPU/Dock that is relatively cheap.

You can generally get a second hand old workstation and second hand graphics card for as cheap as a card itself. You're not going to reasonably add an eGPU to that laptop, it simply doesn't meet the minimum requirements without spending a lot to get the right hardware to do a significant mod that changes the nature of the device.

They aren't, you're spending generally +$100 for the thunderbolt eGPU adapter, some amount on a power supply, and then the rest on the graphics card itself. All of which can be done cheaper with 2nd hand older generation PC hardware that'll likely out perform the CPU in your laptop.

Any recommendations? It would be preferable to avoid eBay and Facebook Marketplace.
