In 2025 there is still some advantage in storing data on a DVD M-Disc, DVD drive manufacturers are abandoning production soon as this disc will not be readable due to the shortage of optical drives.

So what is the question?

I've been hearing this for over a decade. It's FUD.

Besides, even if all the optical drive manufactures ceased production today, it's not like all the drives that already exist will immediately stop working. I have 2x CD-ROM drives that still work.

Blu-Ray drives also read DVDs.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

You're saying there will be a shortage of optical drives as if you can't get forty-year-old floppy drives and magnetic tape readers that still work fine for like $50.

Are SATA DVD drives still being produced by Asus, LG, Samsung, Lite-On?

Which drive is more durable in terms of storage, the 5.25" model or the slim model?

Is the MDisc media marketing or is its resistance real? Resistance to high temperatures and high humidity

Howdy,

I have a video library of over 600 dvd movies and I don't  plan on getting rid of any of them any time soon, so....

When I went with the Hyte 70 case a few months ago I knew that case didn't have any spots for a cd-rom of any type so I got the external Asus BW-16D1X-U Optical Drive.  Yes, it is on the relative high-side when it comes to cost but I figured that since it would be the last time ever of purchasing a cd-rom that it was worth the cost.  Every now and then, I will still pick up another movie to add to my collection but to me, it's worth it.

Here is a list of the features of this drive.

  • Blu-ray, DVD, and CD formats (16x Blu-ray / 16x DVD / 40x CD write speeds)
  • MacOS and Windows Compatiblity via USB 3.0 (USB 3.1 Gen1) connection
  • BDXL format support - up to 128GB data storage in one disc
  • Support for M-DISC provides archival-quality storage to protect your precious data, photos, and videos for up to 1,000 years

I don't have the BDXL function figured out yet, but when I do, it will be a big advantage when it comes to permanent long-term backups.

Therefore, I don't see cd-roms going the way of the do-do bird just yet.

Take care and good luck.

  • 2 weeks later...
the pressure is enough to fit the disc onto the axis, some dvdboxes require a little more pressure

I thought that storing DVD discs in a horizontal position for a long time would cause future damage to the discs due to gravity

mdisc dvd are reliable or pure marketing?
