Hey,

It's been almost 10 years since i last upgraded my pc.

I've now bitten the bullet and ordered a 9800x3D.

Im going to match it with a b850 itx motherboard, and need suggestions for RAM.

What speed and capacity do i need, and where do i get the most value?

And are there perhaps other thing i should look out for?

Apart from gaming relatively new titles such as Cyberpunk and RDR2 i also use it for photo and video editing.

I would personally get the fastest RAM the CPU and motherboard can handle.
Just NOTE with fastest i mean with lowest latency. Thats a combination of raw speed in Mhz and latency numbers. (for first higher is better 2nbd lower is better there are calculators.
But then price also is important, so i do set a budget.

32 GB 6000 CL 30 ram for 9800x3D. Will be more then fine for most people. Unless you are doing video editing for work etc, then 64 GB may be needed, of 96 GB (they now have 2x48 GB dimms!) But 32 GB is still more then enough for most people.

Speed you don't really "need" per say, though 6000 CL30 is generally considered the best bang for the buck since it's the fastest speed that just works on Ryzen 7000/9000, and CL30 is a low set of timings that don't cost an arm and a leg (CL32 is also basically the same performance and sometimes slightly cheaper).

As for capacity, it really depends on what you're doing. For just gaming, 32GB is fine. For the photo/video editing, it depends on the degree to which your doing it, where for higher level projects you might need to go for 48GB, 64GB, or more.

Go for whatever the cheapest sticks you can find for a given speed bin and capacity, for the most part the only noticeable difference from kit to kit is the heat spreader.

Some people will say the QVL since it tells all the kits that are verified to work on a given motherboard, though I wouldn't worry too much about it since a) the QVL is far from exhaustive and there are plenty of kits that will work that aren't present on there, and b) there aren't as many RAM manufacturers as you would think, most just buy all the parts from one of a handful of manufacturers, so despite having a different heat spreader the actual memory module between most manufacturers is actually the same.

Easy. DDR5-6000CL30 in 2x16GB or 2x24GB (or I suppose 2x32GB or 2x48GB if you really need more.)

Don't buy 6200 or 6400 regardless of what your motherboard says it supports, you will be in for a bad day.

32GB seems to be a new comfortable consumer standard in the last 2-3 years. You won't need more than that unless you're hosting servers or doing intense productivity work. Ryzen has a good speed, reliability, and cost advantage at DDR5-6000. Try to get as low CAS latency as possible, generally CL30 is the lowest available, but CL28 has just come out recently with limited availability, like China only or something.
