Good day dear hive mind,

I hope among you there are some folks who have encountered similar problems and found solutions or have just knowledge about it in general. Basically I have gotten an old HP Z800 from a colleague and installed Proxmox on it. He added some funny little additions to it. For example two nice sli graphics cards. I intend to pass them through to the vms, though I am a little scared. Since the mobo has no display output itself, will I get into trouble by basically getting rid of the only display output option the host has by passing it through? Will Proxmox or the Z800's BIOS strike by having no display output?

Second problem is that I have put in a CD drive into the Z800 long after the installation. I am fairly sure that I will have to mount to the host in the shell for the hsot to use it. There are probably loads of manuals and instructions for it since Proxmox is based on Debian. Though I intended to pass the drive through to the vms aswell? Would it even make sense to mount it to the host if I rob it from it shortly afterwards? Or does the host need the drive to be mounted for it to be passed through?

I hope you guys have some really good ideas and input for me. Please don't hesitate to correct my statements. Everything helps to learn! c:

Thanks in advance!

for the 1st question, proxmox will run fine without any gpu at all, although its worth pointing out that proxmox needs a gpu in order to encode the video stream of the vm, that you can see through the proxmox web interface.meaning that if you dont give proxmox access to a gpu, you wont be able to remote into the vms from proxmox

its also worth pointing out that you can share a gpu device across multiple vm's , meaning that you can set up one of the graphics cards to be shared with both proxmox itself, and one of the vm's, basically solving the problem i described above

gaming system: Intel core I9 12900ks / biostar Z690A valkyrie / 4x8gb corsair Vengeance @3333Mhz ram / RX 7900XTX pulse gpu / Thermalright peerless assassin 140 /Coolermaster Qube 500 case / Be Quiet Dark Power Pro 12 1500w power supply

laptop: Dell xps 9510, 3.5k OLED, i7 11800h, rtx 3050 ti, 2x16gb DDR4 @ 3200Mhz, 1TB main drive, 2TB add in ssd

No it doesn't. My Proxmox server doesn't have a GPU and all the VMs display properly.

Only some GPUs support being sliced up, and it's not exactly beginner territory.

As long as the BIOS is cool with booting headless (and Z800s are workstations, so I assume they are), it will be fine.

You should be able to pass the whole device with any mounting, but I haven't really played with that function since you can pass an emulated drive with an ISO loaded just as easily.
