Budget (including currency): 2k CAD

Country: Canada

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Star Citizen, Streaming,

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

Current equipment: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/3rKQMV

Looking to upgrade since Star Citizen is capping out my CPU and RAM and not seeing much room to upgrade on
current rig.
I could probably sell a couple old parts. Been a few years since I've built a system though.
I originally built the PC to prioritize single core speed from playing older games like KSP/Tarkov and some other stuff I haven't visited much lately.

I understand SC likes Multiple cores? presumably the more the better?
Might also need to be careful of power drain. Home tends to trip the breaker annoyingly often.
My tiny PSU used to be good to buy a couple minutes to close things down. lately it's just an extra breaker and probably needs to be retired it self to smaller appliances.
Cyber power 1500VA

2k CAD even enough to put together a replacement? Last time I considered it was around Covid which was a pretty dark age for PC parts in general.

Frustratingly cant be further from the truth. They're all about single core IPC performance and cache size.

Not electrician but make sure if you can always run your PC equipment on a plug with a single breaker. That helped a lot with overcurrent tripping all the time for me personally.

9800X3D would be the most ideal but as you can tell, theyre currently really hard to find, and the 9700X still shows substantial upgrade vs 7800X3D.

  • 4 weeks later...

https://pcpartpicker.com/user/TSOShadow/saved/#view=fpxTP6

So I ended with this list in the end after a few small swaps for prices/availability.
Ran into the cpu compatibility issue though.

I don't get a post screen without it so I guess I need to update the bios somehow...
Not sure if the motherboard even supports that? manual doesn't mention flash features. I need another cpu perhaps??

EDIT

Manual apparently is incorrectly labeled in a number of places.

Managed to back Flash bios with new one. Still getting cpu Dram defunc error. Idk if manual led me astray.

So gonna open up case and check ram and CPU installation.

Worried I screwed up when teaching little sister how it's all done now.

EDIT2

Reseated CPU after checking pins and CPU. It all looks clean and undamaged. No clearly bent pins or dust.

Tried to just post with CPU in and swapped ram sticks using one only.

CPU ram LEDs still on. The rig just shut it self off this time.

Gonna clear CMOS next because I'm out of options. It's new motherboard after this I guess.

EDIT 3

Yup CMOS did nothing. Took battery out and waited for a full minute.

It just sorta long beeps and spins fans up repeatedly until shutdown. Same LEDs lit

EDIT4

It POSTED!

I was just futzing around trying one ram stick in another slot. Noticed the error LEd went out and system sorta... Idle

After redoing thetrmal paste and trying again one specific ram slot works so far.

Gonna try and get pair working and leave this edit to remind me there is broken ram slots throwing errors on MB
