I just reinstalled Windows 11 on a computer. It wasn't mine (and yes, I was asked to do it by the owner), but I couldn't figure out how to get around the sign-in credentials. I had to get it done today and the owner wanted a local account anyway so I made a Microsoft account, installed a local administrative account, then deleted the original account.

However, when looking at folder permissions there is now a very long and "unknown" owner on the main drive as well as the main folders. It usually has special permissions. I'm thinking it's ok to delete it, but then again, I'm not sure it's hurting anything. Any suggestions whether to poke this with a stick or just leave it alone?

Use Rufus to create the Windows 11 bootable USB as it'll give you options to create a local account. The account is created during installation so it will ask you during the disk creation what the desired username would be.

It looks like from reading your text that during the installation process you didn't delete all the partitions on the drive and start over.  If you really want to start with a clean slate, you need to delete all the partitions on the drive and then during the istallation process it will allow you to create new partitions and then install Windoze.

Take care and good luck.

Thanks! I had thought of doing that, but didn't have the time to look up how to. Maybe I'll try that next time.

I see. No, I didn't delete all the partitions on the drive. I'm a bit nervous as the computer is still under warranty and I wasn't sure if those other partitions were important. Then again, maybe I already voided the warranty by re-installing Windows, who knows. All I know is that the computer was freezing and I was asked to re-install Windows.

What brand of computer is it? It's likely those are recovery partitions that contains the original image for the device. So it might be possible to utilize those and restore the computer back to its factory installation.

It's an HP EliteDesk G6 SFF. I do belive there is an original image in there, so that's another reason why I didn't feel like deleting them.

Cool! I might try that if I get the time to. So far the computer seems to be working, but that "unknown user" will haunt me forever even if the computer never freezes again.

Well, the computer crashed again. This computer is hardly used, only has a couple apps used on it. I think they're going to send it back in for the warranty. My only other guess is some periferal is making it crash, like one of the monitors or the web cam, but I'm not entirely sure.

The reliability report says Windows Operating System stopped responding. I did a MemTest and didn't find any problems.
