So I just picked up a new CPU, Motherboard, and RAM, but I didn't realise that the RAM supports XMP not EXPO.

My 2 questions Are:

1. Would the RAM work at all?

2. Would it work at it's advertised mhz (6000)

Motherboard: B650 EAGLE AX AM5 ATX

CPU: Ryzen 5 9600x

RAM: Corsair Vengance RGB 32GB 6000mhz CL36

yes, try it

Yeah I made sure to keep it in the box so I could return it if I needed to.

If youre able to return it and swap it, do it

If not, it should still work as @podkall says

Console.WriteLine("Hello World!");

XMP is old Intel technology that already worked on AMD CPUs,

2007,

All XMP does is change the RAM speed, voltage and timings, the only difference is that EXPO is AMD branded, it's like you take X brand car, to Y brand car repair shop, it's a car, if it's not too specifically different, they can easily check/repair car that isn't their brand.

How sure are you? Because I'm most likely just going to return it and get an EXPO kit unless you're 100% confident it will work

I'm 200% confident, there's no harm in trying either.

It uses same interface, hardware, everything, it's just tuned by Intel technology and not AMD.

I've actually just realised that the RAM isn't on my motherboard's QVL. This just means it hasn't been tested right? Also if I open the box I won't be able to return it anymore so I want to be absolutely sure

Yes it will work, might not work if you use the XMP profile. But it might also be better anyways to just set it manually. Check the primary timings on the sticks and enter the timings, dram voltage and frequency manually instead in BIOS. eg. 36-36-36-96, 1.35v, 6000

Really? Opening box means you can't return it? That's weird, usually warranty is void on RAM when you break it or take off the label off of the actual RAM stick.

As far as I know, some XMP RAMs can have EXPO profile, but could be just some more often produced ones or something.

Most kits that run XMP only, can run on AMD as well. Might not work as good as settings timings manually though. Difference is sub timings🙂

But if difference is sub-timings, why are they advertised? Or are you talking about those non-advertised timings people barely change when doing basic tuning?

xmp is the same thing as expo, its just words... the thing is no one can guarantee you anything because ddr5 ram is *extremely* finicky regardless of xmp or expo...

so yeah no harm in trying it out.

Yes secondary timings. Really depends on the kit. Also I have no experience with DDR5, so might be slightly different. I would simply set primary timings to the same as on sticker. eg. 36-40-40-40-98 and leave everything else on auto, apart from dram voltage and frequency which have to be set. Then let the motherboard take care of the rest of the timings.

i buy 3200 ram set it to 3600, voltage to 1.36, loosen timings +2 so 16-16-16-36.

probably same performance than before but GN tech jesus demands it!  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I use XMP RAM on my AM5 Gigabyte MB even has an XMP button to enable XMP. I don't know if that button label would switch to EXPO if i used EXPO RAM. so that EXPO/XMP seems to be interchangeable. YMMV. My RAM was on the QVL, FWIW.

Just put it in and see.

That is a bit unfair to the seller, don't you think? The fact it wasn't on QVL was known before purchase. If not being on QVL is the sole reason for return, that isn't good enough reason to return.

At least try it out before returning. 99% it will work. If it works, fine. If not, return. Obviously try out different settings before giving up.

No one here can GUARANTEE it will work. There also is no 100℅ certainty QVLRAM will work. Because that kit they tested 2 years ago is different than the one you buy today. But with improved manufacturing, it may get better. DDR 5 is mature now.

I also think a lot of QVL is nit literally tested. They probably test one with shortest timings, and then allow all RAM of the same model with looser timings.

I am currently using an AMD EXPO set of DDR5-6000 CL30 RAM for my 14900K. I tried overclocking the ram and screwing around a bit, I can't get anything long term stable. I have had no BSODs, no crashes, no issues using this ram at stock or EXPO settings.
