Cannot figure out why my PC is shutting itself off mid game

Hello all,

I'm quite desperate at this point so I will welcome any advise.

My PC is shutting down without any notice while in specific moments in game. I did clean Windows install (decided to go Win10>11 finally). Updated BIOS, all drivers etc. It has no impact. I have also stress tested all my components (CPU, GPU, RAM) and after hour+ long stress tests I have not encountered any issues. When I check the error log in Windows, there is only "Unexpected Shutdown" information without any further context.

My PC specs:

CPU: Ryzen 7 9800X3D

RAM: Kingstone 32GB 6000MT/s

GPU: AMD RX 6900XT

MB: ASRock B650E PG Riptide

PSU: Seasonic Prime Ultra 1000W

I play a lot of different games, modern games, old games, and WoW. I did not have any issues with my PC shutting down while I played S.T.A.L.K.E.R.2 for example (quite demanding game). But when I play WoW (retail) during a specific Boss Fight at the same time my PC always shuts down. Recently, I have noticed that the PC shuts down randomly during a different moments in WoW. And for the first time yesterday I experienced the PC shut down when playing also different game - the new Indiana Jones game (after 20+ hours).

I have suspected a faulty GPU, so I tried to change it mine to RX 6700 XT and also to RX 7700 XT. Both new GPUs worked flawlessly and I have not encountered the shut downs. But then I tried a new RX 6900 XT and I started encountering the same issue as with my own RX 6900 XT. At this point there is either something bad with the AMD 6900 lineup or there is another faulty hardware in my PC.

I have a suspicion that it might be faulty PSU. At least that is my deduction that less power hungry cards worked without any issue, but more demanding cards are shutting down the PC. My PSU is roughly 6.5 years old. Since I do plan to upgrade my GPU to the new Nvidia 5xxx series card, I will probably be buying a new PSU as well, but I would like to know for sure what is the cause of the shut downs.

Any tips what I could do to determine the cause of the shut downs?

Thank you!

Hi buddy,

Given the fact you've tried a few different GPUs and are still having issues, I would narrow the list of culprits down to RAM, CPU, Mobo or PSU.

I'm also assuming your various temps are all ok?

Personally, I think it could be the PSU so do you have another one you can pop in a test with?

You could also try removing any OCs you have. Run your ram at base 4800MTs, you could also try a single 16GB stick.

Your gpu probably needs 2*8pin pcie power connectors.

Your psu probably offers 4*8pin pcie power connectors.

Did you try to change the used 8pin pcie power connectors on psu side, also maybe different cables ?

(be carefull to always plug completely)

I'm willing to swim against the current.

try turning off amd's version of XMP.. i know when this was happening to me with intel i 5 12600k.... it was xmp being on. after mobo firmware update it works fine now tho.. and if not.. try undervolting and underclocking gpu and cpu see if that works....

I tried to remove all OC, did clean install of Windows, refreshed BIOS, everything on the software side has been tried I wanna say.

The truth is that the issues began when I changed from 7600X to 9800X3D so that would be obvious culprit, but I did a lot of testing and there is no indication that it is the root cause. So I don't really have any reason to RMA the CPU at this time.

I have just installed different PSU (Be quiet! PURE POWER 12 M 1000W). PC booted up no problem so we shall see if I encounter the issue again. Sadly, I do not have a way to trigger the shut down issue on my own. It is quite random outside of WoW.

GPU actually requires 2*8 pin and 1*6 pin connector, it is quite a hungry one. I could have tried to move to a different lines / connectors on the PSU, I did not think of that.

I tried to turn off all the OC, AMD Smart Access Memery (Resizable Bar), etc. Nothing really helped.

So the issue persists even after changing the PSU. But I noticed that if I'm using the default set up, and I lower the Graphics settings in WoW, my PC no longer shuts down. But the game looks like garbago.
